Swap 3L from Toyota forklift?
Just wondering if anyone has done this. The 3L's never made it to the states in any road vehicles (maybe Canada though?) but are supposed to be more stout than the 2Ls, which are prone to cracking heads, and a lot of Toyota forklifts used them. The specs I've seen on the forklift 3L are 75HP @ 4000 RPM and 140 ft/lbs @ 2400 RPM. The 3L in the Hilux was rated the same for torque but 90HP, so the forklift version probably just has the fuel turned down.
At 90HP (and there's probably room for some improvement there too)/140 ft/lbs, performance is not all that different from a 22RE with one key difference. Peak HP and torque occurs 800 RPM lower in both cases. For my purposes, top end really doesn't matter as the truck won't see highway driving much, plus I plan to put 5.71s in it, so acceleration shouldn't be a problem

Be interesting for sure
Would you need to run to the fork lift( Toyota Industrial engines) dealer for parts?/
Does it bolt to the bell housing or do you need to make a custom bell housing
Seems like a major undertaking

As far parts I guess it depends. I'm willing to bet that a lot of parts are shared with the 2L, which was available here. The 3L just has a different bore and stroke. In fact, you can bolt a 3L head to a 2L or 2LT block which gets around the fact that the 2L/2LT heads are prone to cracking, and supposedly will give a little more power, so I'm leaning toward that.

You can bolt up a 2LT turbo setup to a 3L and it makes decent power.
You will need an L series bellhousing to bolt it up and a flywheel for the 3L, a 22r flywheel will not bolt up.
The motor mounts bolt up to 22r frame mounts though.

thanks bootscootboogy
I'll check him out! My 22re died a couple weeks ago, and a diesel has always been on my wish list....(was gonna do a TDI, but that's a lot of work and $$$).... This seems more up my alley.
