OM617 Kit

Hello everyone I am working on developing my own OM617 to Toyota G52/54 W56 and R151 transmission adapter plate and all the other accessories that are needed to completely install the engine. From there I want to make a conversion kit for you guys with the 3.slow engines too. I have a 1982 Pickup that I am converting myself. I work as a cnc machinist and going to school for mechanical engineering, I am in the process of writing the code for them. I am curious if anyone would be interested in acquiring one of these when I am done. I going to be making 12 to start out with.

Due to the poor customer service skill of people currently making this adapter and kit, if you can stay on top of the demand, you should do fine. I know one of the reasons I haven't done it yet is due to the flakes making the kit. More trouble than it's worth.

I love Mercedes diesels...

That is one of the biggest things that I have noticed with regards to those who currently are offer these conversions is how poor their customer service is. Initially I was going to use a TDswap kit but after failing to come in contact I decided to make my own. Here is a picture to show I'm not just blowing steam.

Adapter #1

Hey I stayed after work today and worked at a free machine to try out the first plate with a piece of 6061 that was laying around.

I'm sure there's demand for them.. Advertise in the appropriate subforum and maybe even the TDSwaps thread!

Will your kit include r150 transmissions or just r151? (Or am I ignorantly assuming they're different?)

Yes the R150 and R151 are completely different animals, the V6 is going to take more time to figure out how to make it work but once I get it dialed there will be plenty of demand I hope with all of the blown V6 Toyotas out there. I am working on it right now though with someone who has a V6. There are plenty of ways to get the OM617 under the hood of one but I'm just tossing around the most user friendly way for those with the V6. Either move the entire drive train back at least 4 inches and mess with drive shafts or keep it stock and have a body lift or a hood scoop and push the radiator forward and have a pusher fan on the front.

In case it matters, my vote is for stock with adjusted driveshafts.

x2, it would be much easier for a driveline shop to modify driveshafts than move everything else. So long as i don't have to reinvent the wheel with moving the transmission crossmember around, thats my vote. it'll still be a tight fit. If you were in TX i would let you borrow my Runner.

I am in the planning stages of an m617 swap. I am aiming to finish it by the beginning of this summer. I have a 93 pickup with a 3.0 and manual transmission. If you are going to be cranking out prototypes or even better, a tested product, I would certainly be interested in purchasing one. I would also be looking for the pilot bearing adapter if you are planning on making those too. Can't wait to hear more.

Just noticed you are in Oregon as well!

Also, if you need some more opinions, I would prefer making adjustments to driveshafts and crossmember than having to hack up my grill and radiator supports. Also, I can't stand the thought of having the damn radiator in the bed of my truck like some of these guys have done.

Looking good!

I adjusted the driveshafts on mine; different platform though! Seems the route to take to make a kit, that anyone could use, is to adjust the driveshafts. Once you have the prototype brackets (tranny and both engine), you can fab up some jigs to make for time effective fabrication.

FYI- Many OM617 folk would also like oil filter relocation plates, EGR block-off plates, and vacuum pump delete block off plates, (Anyone know any more?). Folks of all different rig swaps with a OM617 would want that stuff as well; and since you can CNC them out relatively cheap; it could have a higher profit margin and it would still be a good deal for folks.

A few questions:

-How far will it move the transmission backward?
(Is it different for the R151 vs R150?)

-Will it require notching the oil pan?

Cheers!

All of my stuff is sold. I am making a short run of W56 adapter plates and pilot bearing adapters. PM me if interested. I will be getting rough quotes tomorrow. I don't plan to make a business out of this; I just want to help the people out who are needing adapter plates right now. It's not certain at this point whether I'll offer hardware or not. I would just get it from Fastenal if I got it, so it's rather pointless for me to buy it.

I'll be interested in a couple of years when I decide to do the swap. How much are you asking. Pyrojoe22

I have two test rigs right now that are different animals my truck is a crawler the other a stock rig I am playing with making the right stuff to be able to adapt to any Toyota. I am going for having my products out no later than June. Everything I can is going to be CNC machined to cut down manufacturing costs and that just makes things better for you the customer! I hope to have your weed collector gone and your Yota Rollin' coal if possible! So far so good with adapters 1 and 2, I just need the assurance that I won't be blowing up peoples trannys, I'm happy to here all of the input from everyone also. Maybe we'll have to get some OM swap group together at Moab sometime this year?!

Power Steering bracket

I just finished my om617 swap into my 1993 pickup. I moved the engine/transmission back as far as I could, but my power steering pump still just barely doesn't clear the rsdiator. Will you be making an adapter to move the Mercedes pump back to the other pulley? I know TDSwaps did, so just wondering. Thanks
