Do the original holes in the toyota flywheel need to be welded/plugged?

Wow great job flatspeed... love that beautiful mtn. scenery and turbo whistle... gotta love free Jet A... you getting it with the Prist already added for cold wx flow?...
I thought the extra cabs came with the big 73L tank or did that stop when they went to the Tacoma... #s will probably improve once you get her all dialed in right...
I could get my paws on all kinds of waste 100LL but don't want to plug up my CAT with lead gunk...

4 of the 8 holes need to be plugged and welded,
then you redrill to the 12-hole mercedes pattern

This is for a v6 (5uzfe) flywheel, see pics on first page

Thanks aviator!
It's just straight up Jet-A, we don't get too cold here in coastal BC. Yea too bad about the 100LL, its a tease for sure..
55L when I fill my tacoma, so i'm guessing its a 60L, the old extra cab I had was the same.

Here is another vid

Fuel economy, i'm getting about 25mpg, or roughly 600km to a tank (55L). Tires are 32's, stock gearing, so i'm probably getting a tad more than that, but who cares, since my old 22re truck was getting 380kms max out of 55L.

Power is about the same as the 22re. Torque is alot better. Will idle around in first/reverse no prob without touching the gas pedal. Built this thing to haul the sled around and it's great, no issues there. Only problem at this point is the lack of power off-boost. I will be doing my timing chain to address that, as suggested in that other thread, as well I might mess with the ALDA a bit.

More pics and vid to follow

Sweet truck!!!!!!

Hey is that a AS350 FX or twinstar in the back ground?

7000kms and still running great.

some engine bay pics now that i've cleaned it up a little, still have to omit the toyota wiring harness, seeing as i've only used a few wires out of it

I ended up picking up a rock in the original mercedes rad. Bought this one from summit racing, it is similar in dimensions, but thicker, and aluminum. Only the top 3" is ever hot, and the fan rarely comes on now..

Have you done any tuning to try and squeeze out more power from it? I'd love to do this but i'd want more power then the 5vz it would replace.

I've messed with the Alda screw and that solved the off-boost power issue but I've got to say, if you are looking for more power than the 5vz, this swap is 100% not for you.
I also have a 1998 4runner with the 5vz and it would destroy the diesel. They are like 190hp/220tq stock, and you would be lucky to see the factory rated 125hp/180tq from an om617.
I know people on here will chime in about how powerful their om617's are but again, unless you can somehow get more fuel into it (modded m-pump from Europe, $$$, rare), you are wasting your time. I would love to go this route if I could somehow get my hands on one.
That said, bone stock if you are into better fuel economy or free alternative fuels...then you have good reason to do it!

5VZ may have more peak torque than an om617 but where does it make that torque in the RPM band? a diesel will always beat a gas engine when it comes to getting moving and pure grunt power because the peak torque comes in much lower in the "useful" area of the RPM band.

This is true, the om617 does have a lot of useable torque. I often just take my foot off the clutch to get going, so it's good for crawling around, etc.
that said, the 5vz isn't terrible in this dept. either.
I drive both, sometimes back to back on the same day, and they both have their advantages/disadvantages. I wouldn't be removing a perfectly good 5vz to do this swap though. The 3.4 swap is pretty common among 3.0 guys for good reason.
