88 4Runner 1kd-ftv swap (NEW) w/pics
#141
JBurt, I'm not looking to start any business out of this venture, but I'll be happy to help anyone trying to do the same swap. If I buy an engine package, or a salvage vehicle from a dismantler, that would be a repeatable source. But if I get one out of the classifieds that 4runner4ever finds, that would be a one shot purchase from an individual.
Chef, I have actually considered flying to a location to make a purchase if it would save me money. However, it wouldn't be anytime soon since I have family trips planned that have my vacation hours spoken for.

If you want some good help from a JDM exporter who knows what he is talking about, then email Mark at Brave Auto Japan. mark@braveautointernational.jp. He can get you what you want.

We used him years ago to get a small Toyota diesel for a forklift in Japan. I happened to ask our maintence guy who we used and he diged this up in the files. He won't know me personally.
Here is a link to his website...

Now I see where he mainly imports to Canada and Australia, however I know he got us what we needed.

I have read right through this whole thread and I have a couple questions for you.
are you gonna stick with the stock setup or are you gonna add a larger turbo and air to liquid intercooler for more power?
what transmission do you plan on using?
keeping this on my radar, thanks for doing a lot of digging for me lol

Install will be completely stock. No plans to go liquid cooled intercooler, not yet at least. I plan on using the R151F, mated to my RF1A. If that doesn't work i will use my R150f and just swap bellhouses and input shafts from the R151f.

I would take it to a local college... has to be at least one japanese student lol
It is nice to see that you are going to keep it mostly stock.. one of my buddies has a turbo diesel surf and a 5 speed. after a couple gas millage mods, he gets 13km per liter intown and close to 17 km per liter on the highway.... stuff like manual locking hubs... full synthetic lube and low speed limits help these numbers lol
I am wondering since you are planning on importing anyways... have you looked at direct liquid propane injection? it runs 105 octane and with a proper build you could use 12:1 compression and a 5-10 lb boost turbo setup... lots of power and cheap fuel. I plan on doing a couple upgrades in the near future including a 4.0 lexus v8 with a supercharged propane setup. to handle the power I plan on using a newer toyota complete rear axle (with e-locker) and a special front 8" supralux diff setup.... no more breaking for me.
keep in mind that the most expensive part of either of these swaps is still gonna be the turbo setup and those air-liquid intercoolers have the highest efficiency. they dont cost much more then the regular ones and give you a nice boost in power. close to 10% gain on most cars I see that already run an intercooler... probably closer to 20% on one without.

Yup i have read a bunch of the Supralux stuff.
I honestly know very little about turbos, and especially diesels, but i'm figuring it out. First thing is to get the halfcut ordered, and then make sure it runs before i stuff it in the 88'. Then install as per factory, clean up the wiring/engine bay, drive the snot out of it. Make sure its solid and dependable(update all maintenance). Then the sickness will take over and i'll start modding it further. Thanks for the info.
Aviator, I can't feed them into a translator, they are JPGs. I have an older friend that may be able to translate it for me, i don't really need it right this second. But the college thing is a great idea.

I definitely think making sure it runs first is a big thing.. if your ever looking to do some turbo upgrades you can check out the supra's for bigger better and badder setups. Keep in mind that most people dont use the liquid to air intercoolers so you wont find much on them... just more efficient and smaller with a little plumbing.. makes for a better setup.
till then... I just know my local guys that do imports and are a little on the expensive side... 10k for a surf with a lot of repairs lol.... never pay that myself

And I'll need to switch to the 1kz-fte oil pan part# 12101‑67080 and sump part# 15104‑67050. Steering clearance on the ifs still under my rig. I'd do an sas, but not if I don't have to right now.
