I don't know if you've seen it but I thought I'd share. Looks semi similiar. He's taking off all the electronics.

sorry, i thought i responded to this.
i have spoken to Winch several times about his swap. my last exchange with him, a few weeks ago, he said the motor was having compression issues, and could even need a new crank.

in other news, i met with a local shop to discuss the import of the halfcut through them, should know more in the next few weeks.

No Update
....but
I have been reading threads on Yotatech, pirate4x4 and many other Toyota diesel conversion threads. As you are aware if you Google Toyota diesel swap/conversion 1kz OR 1kd, most Toyota diesel engine swaps die without coming to fruition, leaving pages of unanswered questions and dreams of soot in its wake. Just when you think you have search the entire inter-web looking for more information,…. trying to find problems and solutions so you are as prepared as you believe you can be,….. you find another dead-end thread.
But not mine, no way... I won't let that happen. I want this diesel swap, and it WILL happen. I promise to not leave this diesel swap to perish in unfounded or unresolved internet limbo. And I will do my best to capture relevant information while documenting my conversion process for future grease burner swaps.
I am now waiting for a check to clear in order for the …uh…order to be placed.

I KNOW YOU will get this! Not to be weird... I don't mean this in a psychic way or anything... But I actually could almost SEE this thing in videos in my 'HEAD MOVIES' when you started this thread. I can SMELL YOUR DETERMINATION FROM HERE, MAN!

Any news on the engine? Got sources lined up?

Where do you THINK you'll get it from? Japan? SA? AUSTRALIA? Curious... I know you're probably wanting to have all your ducks in a row, first, before you make this HUGE CHACHING$$$ investment! .... What HAVE you found out, so far, RB? Anything that put the brakes on things you WERE thinking, etc. ? Or maybe skinny pedal in ways, speeding things up?

Best wishes... And, just curious... Have you searched the Japan or South Africa or South America or even ARAB 4WD threads, exhaustively??? I figure you have, no doubt... but just curious... again, haha.

SICK PROJECT!

Mark,
I posted up because i wanted to let folks know where i was at the moment.

The D4D will probably be sourced from Australia, but this is a detail i need to find out from the importer. Currently i have 2 lined up to complete my order. The South African and South American route is a bit difficult to find information on, and don't even start about the Middle East. I have searched the Middle East but either i get no answer back or some sketchy answer. Language with all these areas is one thing, but many diesels get exported from Asia to the Middle East, so they export very little, and i am guessing that customs would have a field day with a diesel half-cut coming in from the ME.

Subscribed! This is an incredibly ambitious project. As I was first reading through this thread I was thinking "why the hell would anyone go through all that trouble? Just get a 5VZ or a 3RZ and be done with it." But reading more about this motor I keep thinking more and more that this will probably be one of the best swaps anyone could do. The power and the gas mileage are awesome AND you'll be staying Toyota. I'm rooting for you to get a motor at a good price, patience is key, I wish I had some connections to help out. I hope they start selling Tacomas and LCs with this motor here in the states, I know there's a market for them here plus it will make it a lot easier to get these motors for swaps. REALLY looking forward to the swap, it's gonna be awesome!

Thanks Ian, I have an electric from my R150, and I can just swap ends from my mechanical to fit the r1fa t-case.

This is quite an ambiciuos endeavor, I'm taking this swap very seriously. I may choose to do the 1kz but I'm still shooting for the 1kd. The 5vz would have been a good choice and easy comparably speaking, but my father has one and he gets the same mileage I do. In fact I average better but he has had higher recorded mpg at times.
I really just after reliability(once the nozzles and head gasket replaced as a precaution) and improving range. There is another side to this and it's the simple fact that I want to do the swap with a Toyota diesel.

1KD-FTV known Issues

As usual, i am still obsessing over this engine, and possible pitfalls to the swap.Upon further research some owners seem to be experiencing a contamination of the oil from leaky Injection seals. This contamination will clog the oil screen and starve the engine for oil...this equals a new engine.
Unfortunate the 'low oil pressure' warning light Toyota uses actually seems to turn on when the engine has been severely damaged according to some owners. Some even claim that the light doesn't function correctly.
Not all engines have this issue, but the ones that do seem to have not had the injection seals updated. Toyota now recommends checking the oil screen(in the oil pan on the sump) at every service interval 28,000miles. From what i have read, you can actually see the oil screen by looking up the drain-plug hole in the oil pan, so dropping the pan would only be necessary if the screen is clogged.
At this time i am unclear if this issue is related to the injectors going bad, causing the famous 'rattle' owners complain about.
The more i search the more these engines seem very delicate. This puts me off a bit, because i am ordering an engine from a source that may sell me an engine that has some of this damage already, even-though it still holds compression, and passes other tests.

an example of damage

and a lengthy thread discussion:

PS....The 1KZ-TE does not suffer from any of the above mentioned that i know of at this time.

Wow, that could be a pretty serious issue considering how hard it is just to get ONE motor here. Are the newer plated seals supposed to fix that problem? As with any engine with a questionable/unknown history I would do a rebuild before I tried to run it. That means new parts/gaskets though. Can you even get parts for this motor here?

B-Fake,
Parts and the bare engine can be had pretty easily. parts from your local dealer, provided you have the part number. And you can order engines from many sources online. What isn't very easy to get(unless you have a reliable source) is a half-cut. The half-cut is crucial to this engine conversion because of the CRD electricals entangled throughout the donor vehicle.
BTW, my truck has the most heavily corroded wires of any vehicle i have ever owned, and i am constantly replacing them as i find issues.
I will be buying an engine site unseen, and will do a thorough inspection, price permitting i may just inspect, freshen up and install if all looks good. This also depends on the mileage. If that is my route i will order up a rebuild kit to have on hand at a later date. I need to get this engine running before i touch anything due to the complexity.
As i have mentioned above, i am unclear of how many engines the clumping oil happens too. The injector seal should be replaced if they are the original(pre-2007) seals with the newer, however the seals should still be checked regularly and replaced every 45,000 miles....Or so i have read.

I am sure you have seen this...I should say, I hope you have seen this. Here is all your stuff in one simple place.

http://dieseltoys.com/toyota

And further more they offer a kit for the D-4D with engine, transmission, accessories, cooling and harness. Heck they make it too simple.

http://dieseltoys.com/kits

Hope this helps you.

On a side note, this has me interested in it...

Jarco has not imported these since 2008 due to EPA importation regulations so we have had to become our own importers. Here's an FJcruiser D-4D we're finishing up.

Todd, that will have the nz and oz guys drooling, iirc they get the fj cruiser with a gasser only.
I tried Jarco first to find out they don't import anymore, their name is plastered all over the net for halfcuts. Of course much older posts, but man they must have been selling a ton.

Can you weigh in on why the diesels are forbidden by the EPA, but why some companies can still import them? I've heard it was pressure from the big 3 automakers to keep better diesels out of NA.

Are you going to graphed a hilux or landcruiser scoop?
