Starting 3.4 Swap - Some Questions

Well I grabbed a 91 ext cab 5 speed with a blown 3.0. The truck is in nice shape, no rust on box, lil hole on fender/rocker, and it's on 32 MT's with 70%. Paid $1500CAD, which is a decent price here in Vancouver Island.

Got the motor out yesterday. The guy hydro-locked it. I'll need a new 3.0 baffle cause two rods shot a couple of nice holes in it.

I'll be using the stock cross over and hacking it up to dump on the driver side.

I also purchased all the stock AC components out of an 94, which is R-134a, for $250. I will be installing that as well and hopefully getting it to work on the 3.4 block. Might have to source out a 3.4 AC bracket.. gotta read over all that again.

Anyways, I have a couple questions I need help with ASAP.

The motor I'm looking at buying is a 99 5 speed ,it has 90,000 KM's on it. $800 with harness, no ECU, no flywheel/clutch but otherwise fully dressed. I read on Pirate that I can use either the 3.0, or the 3.4 flywheel/clutch as long as you use the 3.0 throw out bearing. Is this true or do I need to source out a 3.4 flywheel? I've read on here to use the 3.4 stuff. Either way I'll definately take this motor because I don't want to pass on the low km's at such a good price, even if I have to buy a flywheel.

And secondly. where on the 5vzfe is the VIN located?

Thanks,

Can't help with the clutch question since I'm auto, but there is no VIN on the engine. Instead, there is a serial number stamped on the block. It's on a flat boss located on the front left side or front right of the block just below the head. I don't remember which side but I do have pics at home if needed. I made a tracing of mine in case the referee here needed to see it.

You'll need to source a 3.4 clutch and flywheel. Use the 3.0 throwout bearing.

As for the VIN, someone mentioned that it's under the timing belt cover, though I can neither confirm nor deny this.

Thanks Cartune, I read similar info on Pirate. It's good to know I can use both.

My understanding is that you'll need the 3.4 flywheel and clutch because of the higher power output. Mine came with it, so I decided to run with it. I did have to use the oil pickup from the 3.0 with one of the legs cut off (you'll see what I mean, if you haven't pulled the pan yet).

What did you guys run for exhaust?

I'd leaning towards cutting up the stock crossover to dump to the other side, for cost reasons, but I'm worried about exhaust flow.

I tried doing the cut crossover route, but the 3.4 that I had dumped into two outlets at the flange. The flange was then too wide to fit between my firewall and frame rail, so I had to pull it out and have a new crossover built to dump into one outlet at the collector. Keep it tight to the block and bellhousing and you shouldn't have clearance issues.

I had a custom exhaust built from that point, since mine was crap and rusting out anyhow. You'll need two O2 sensors, or at least do the #2 O2 sensor bypass. I think Elvota has some info in his post about that.

The pipe is 2.25" back to a high flow cat, then into a high flow muffler. Anything bigger is a waste of money. It sounds good, puts out really good power and if headers would make any difference, I'm not sure I see how.
