Radiator recommendations
I drive an 89 single cab that I swapped a 3.4 into over the past year. The truck is running great but I don't think the 3.0 aluminum radiator I used is up to the task of keeping the larger 3.4 cool. If I'm driving around it stays a little under the half way mark on my gauge. It's when I'm sitting still for more then a few minutes that the temp will begin to slowly climb (like if I'm in line at Dutch bros). I live in the desert and I don't want to have to worry about it out in the extreme heat this summer, anybody have any recommendations for a bad ass radiator that works well in this swap?

i under stood that the 3.0 and 3.4 rads were the same? but it sounds like your clutch fan isnt working propperly. or your rad is old and failing like wyoming said.

Possibly electric fan is not moving enough air or not coming on when needed. The stock fan and fan clutch in the 3.4 gets the job done well.

a fan shroud is just as important as the fan itself. some times an electric fan tied to the radiator only cools the rad directly in front of the fan and not the whole radiator. basicaly a 12" fan is the same as having a 12" radiator

I'm running the same 3 row brass one I had in my 88 pickup with the 22RE. It was getting old so I did have it serviced.
I'm running the 3.4 fan clutch with a 3.0 fan. Not the one with the ring around the circumference.
Also had to build a custom shroud because of how I mounted everything. I'm in Tucson and it never runs hot. Even with the A/C on.
I've tried the electric fan thing and it just didn't do the job out here in the desert heat.

I did not reinstall my shroud, and did not drop my radiator after my 1.5 body lift and have had no problems whatsoever FWIW.

I mounted the radiator and marked where the fan center was on the rad. It was off to one side and the rad would have to be lowered 1 1/2" since I lowered my engine to avoid cutting the hood.
The 22RE fan would not fit and the 3.4 fan was way too big so I used the 3.0 fan with the 3.4 fan clutch.

So the fan is off to one side but I centered it vertically and then made drop brackets to lower the radiator. It all bolts in super easy with no mods to radiator or radiator mount holes in truck.

I know some people get away without a shroud but, I never do here in the Arizona heat.
There are supposed to be 3.0 shrouds that fit but, there are several types apparently and I didn't know which one to get and did not want to take the chance of buying the wrong one(s) and dealing with returns or having to modify them anyway.

I'm running a 3.0 radiator with a 3.4 fan, no shroud. My lower hose looks to be pinched off but haven't had a problem though.
Try a stock clutch fan before buying another radiator.

Well what I did was I bolted my old 3.0 (my swap was a 3VZE to the 5VZ) fan to the 3.4 fan clutch and used pulled the shroud off a 4runner at a junk yard and it fit just fine.
I think that is rule of thumb when doing 5VZ swaps in the 2nd and 3rd gen pickups, you use a 3.0 fan and a 3.0 shroud

Believe me, If I could have found the CORRECT 3.0 shroud, I would have used it. I found several different part numbers for 3.0 shrouds but had no way to look at them.
I gave up and made my own. If you can find a Toyota stocker, use it and save some fab time.
