Do I need to wire P/N switch?
I have searched for this and have found many threads, but I am getting confused between them. I originally had a 1995 MANUAL pickup that I swapped a 97 MANUAL 3.4 into. Ran great, everything was perfect. I have since removed the same 97 3.4, manual trans, and all wiring from the truck and installed it into a 1991 AUTO 4runner. The 3.4, trans, harness, and ECU are all exactly the same as taken from the working vehicle, but I cant get it to start. Do I still need to jump the P/N switch since the 4runner was originally an auto, even though I dont have an auto ECU or harness? Thanks for your help.

I know that the PN switch runs through the body harness of my 95 4runner and the PN switch ties into ECM "STA", which the ECU needs to see when trying to start. I believe it's IH1 22 on the 4runner body harness, and run a jumper to ECM "STA". So jump P/N switch and run jumper leg to "STA"??? This is just my thinking, I hope someone else would chime in.

Ya i think one side of the switch is ground, so you should be able to cut the wire, put a ring terminal on it, and ground it... The pn switch is just like the clutch start switch, you have to have it pushed to start...

Yeah I believe it's necessary to have the P/N switch wired in, or at least jumped, to complete the circuit to ECM STA. There may be a proper way to wire it in to a manual, but I'm not familiar with it.

Ok check this out... this shows the difference between the auto and manuals... I was wrong about grounding it, you have to put power to it. But it looks like im right about being able to wire it directly to your clutch starts switch... http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/2000/Wiri...20Ignition.pdf

Thats pretty much what I was thinking, that it was in the body harness somewhere so the 3.4 harness didnt affect it. I want to trace it down and see if there a connector where it can be done where the auto shifter used to be in the console, or if it has to be done at the ECU. I know the switch itself was on the auto tranny that was pulled, but Im not sure where the connector for that goes. Ill update if I find anything.

I hope the diagram makes sence to you... these switches give the power to the positive side of the starting relay, so without them, the relay wont click on... I believe its part of the in dash wiring harness, so it doesnt matter if you switched engine wiring harnesses. All you need to do is snip the black/white wire off the pn switch and run it to the black/white one on your clutch switch...

Ok, that makes sense. I dont have a clutch switch since the 4runner was an auto, but I could wire that right at the ECU. Thanks for explaining, I have no idea how I got this thing running so well the first time considering I am absolutely horrible with wiring diagrams!

Update, for anyone who ever comes across this in the future, I thought I would help out. On the AUTOMATIC vehicle, a thick all BLACK wire runs into the body connector for the P/N switch, IH1. Coming out of the IH1 on the other side (the side you wired for the 3.4 swap), there is nothing there. Put a similar gauge wire into the plug, and then T that to the STA terminal where you came from the starter. This will bypass the P/N switch and allow the vehicle to start on a 5spd 3.4 swap into an automatic vehicle. This is probably found somewhere on the forum, but I figured I would update in case people run into the same problem.
