clutch install question

I remember when I was putting my clutch in that I wasn't sure which way the clutch disc was supposed to face. So I got out my trusty 3.0 FSM and thought I had it figured out.

I just read Elvota's post where he initially installed it backwards. He posted how to do it properly and it seems to contradict my FSM. Now I'm confused.

Is this a swap issue where you need to install it opposite the FSM or is my FSM wrong. Or does it face the other way on a 3.4l. Now I think I may have it in backwards. Anyone have any insight. Thanks.

The springs should face out, towards the pressure plate. I don't think you can put it in backwards

Right. So if you look at it from the side, one side is flatter than the other. Flatter side to the flywheel. That's what my FSM says and that's how I did it. Thanks. Most of the instuctions I read say what you just did, "springs to the PP".

I think the confusion comes from the fact that you can see springs on both sides of the clutch disc. My FSM had a diagram that I thought was pretty clear.

You can definitely install it backwards. I tried it both ways and either would have fit. That's why I went and got the FSM. Of course it'll only operate one way.

Thanks for the re-assurance. I definitely don't feel like dropping the tranny this late in the swap.

Uh...I'll check my 3.0 tomorrow, but one of us 2 has done it backwards.

I installed it with the "deep side" towards the engine, and the "flat side" towards the transmission.
Not to be a jerk and wish more work on you, but I really hope I did it right and you have it backwards.

Well, my 3.0 had the deep side out...took pics but can't post 'em, not on my computer. Guess we'll have to wait for Elvota to chime in or one of us to fire up.

Edit: check out http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/2003/Repa...luuni/inst.pdf

you can relax Jonnyboy, those instructions are different than mine and I'm pretty sure mine is backwards. Damn, looks like I'm dropping the tranny.

Thanks for posting up that link.

OK well the truck won't go in gear so now I don't know what the hell to think. I followed the instructions in that post. I think I had it right the first time. Jonnyboy does your clutch work?

I just talked to my mechanic he said flat side towards flywheel. I should have left it alone. Should have listened to you DC. I must be reading Elvotas instructions wrong.

i've always installed flat side to flywheel. never had problems. did that to my 3.0 and my 3.4 drives just fine. I worked in a shop for 2 years and thats how all of them were done. flat side to fly wheel.

Neo, mine is working fine. I've taken it on up to 45 and shifted to 4th gear already. I used a Marlin clutch kit, maybe there's some slight differences? I do know the stock clutch I pulled off the motor wouldn't actually fit flat side to flywheel at all, and that was the unit put on from the factory.

The only thing I could think of is bleeding, but I have to assume you've already done that and checked that.

Ya that is what I had originally. Should have left it alone. Oh well here we go again. I'm going to see if I can do it in under 2 hours this time.
