Lots of guys have been spreading rumors about automatic 3.4 motors not having the prevision for a pilot bearing. THAT IS FALSE! At least it is for all the automatic motors I've seen.

This picture is of a 2004 3.4 out of an automatic truck. Looks to me like that's a hole for a pilot bearing.

I have a friend that's a 14 year Master Toyota Mechanic. I asked him this question a couple of years ago and he just looked at me like I was retarded for even asking. He says "it would be crazy retarded for Toyota to machine 2 different crank shafts for a motor that's built to have a 5 speed behind it".

Here's my disclaimer. Take the above info how every you want. I'm NOT responsible if, for some reason you guys find an automatic 3.4 with out a pilot bearing hole. All I'm saying is don't be mad at me. I purchased the above pictured motor today without knowing if it had the hole or not. I don't think Toyota would have done anything different on the older motors.

I've seen quite a few 3.4's from many different years and trucks and they all had the hole. The above pictured motor came out of a 2004 Tundra.

Do you know what year or vehicle the motor came out of?

Humn, interesting ... thanks for posting that up. No matter to me, as I already have my 3.4 - it came from an auto tranny '99 Runner and has the spot for the pilot bearing as well; but still interesting ...

Just my $.02

EVERY 3.4l auto I have sold has had the crank machined for a pilot bearing

And I checked with my parts guy at Maita Toyota and there is only ONE part number for 5vz-fe crank's up to 2001 in which the change was with the snout and the balancer journal size only.

EXACTLY , If you check with a Toyota dealer .

there is only 1 crank avaliable , wether its for atm or mtm . they are all machined on the same automated line . they ALL will have the recess for a pilot bearing .

Okay instead of starting a new thread.

I am about to go buy a 3.4 out of a 99 tacoma. its got 130,000 miles on it but runs perfectly supposedly. ($700) Its out of an auto and my 4runner im trying to swap it in has a 5-speed.

I just want to clarify that if i buy this motor i can make it work for my 3.4 swap..

Correct?

Thank you
-Mike

Not sure what you are asking exactly but the simply anwser is: yes!

You're not going pass any emissions with the Auto ECU. Plus the wiring will be interesting.

Why would i not be able to pass emmissions?

Okay ive been searchign aroudn for a motor.
I just found one today, it is out of a 99 Tacoma, auto. The motor has 130,000 miles on it and the guy says it runs great.

My truck is a 5-speed, so im wondering if i buy the Tacoma motor if it will be a good candidate for my 3.4 swap. Im just trying to verify whether or not i can make it work. Now i do live in Commyfornia, but i jsut smoged my truck so i would have more than a year before i have to smog again (every other year)

But for 700-800 bucks what do you think???

The auto ECU will be looking for input from an auto trans. When it doesn't get those signals it puts out a check engine light.

EDIT: you could repin/rewire the harness and swap a Manuel ECU in.

okay. well im doing research right now and i thought people did something to the ecu to make it think its always in neutral and thats how they bypass it.

Ive been searching like a hawk on here/pirate and others trying to find the answer.
