97 4Runner 3.4l ecu and harness questions
#1
97 4Runner 3.4l auto donor
90 4Runner receiver also auto
Switching to manual R150F
I have a 97 4Runner 3.4 manual tran ecu
Is the original 3.4 auto engine harness usable? I know the connectors from auto to manual ecu are different but is it all or some?
Is there another year of man harness that will work better or have the correct connectors?
Seems to be info all over the place.
Isn't there a Toyota only swap dude that coverts harnesses? Might be worth the effort and money to just do that.
Thanks in advance for input.

theres a shop in oregon that does harnesses. Toyota only swaps or something like that. You could always repin the harness but that would take a long time. Might be easiest to just find a manual harness.

I can confirm that the auto and manual plugs are completely different. The auto ones are like the later years, where there are like 4 or 5 rows, and they are more square looking. The 97 manual is like the older manuals, where its 2 rows only. I know this because I had gotten a 99 manual harness and a 97 manual ecu. I thought I had gotten an auto, until I did more research. Had to find the 97 manual plugs somewhere, and then splice in the wires. Was a daunting task.

you can order the plugs through the dealer. Or atleast i was able to do so on 2 different occasions. Fyi, one of the plugs from the 3.0 harness will fit manual 97 ecu as your "D" plug. It goes to the body harness.

agreed. But when I tried in Oregon, none of the toyota dealers I called had plug A. I could get B and C, and D of course as you said comes from plug A of the 3.0 computer. Which is nice, because if you don't cut it, most of the wires that go to the body are still attached. You just have to move them.
In fact 2 of the dealers said that they couldn't get them at all. That it would be an overseas part or something. That their main warehouse didn't even have them. But that is from the dealer. Sometimes I don't trust them as far as I can throw them.

Rob at Toyota of kirkland has helped me several times with the past 3.4 swaps i've done. I've ordered sc stuff harnesses and plugs through him. Although the harness was almost impossible to get.

I have just about the same setup as you.
97 runner auto harness (had auto ECM and trans installed)
92 pickup
Bought a 97 Runner manual ECM
I got lucky and bought an ECM with the plugs and a few inches of wires. I repinned the auto harness to the manual plugs and everything is perfect. You would just have to find the plugs for the manual ECM.
Really wasnt that hard. Details are in my thread on the last page.

Is there a plug for the manual ecu that comes off the body harness as my harness appears to only have 3 of the 4 plugs needed? Is this the "d" plug you speak about? Is it on auto and manual 3.0 body harnesses?
