wiring help please.

I am kinda getting started on my wiring harness, but am unsure where to start. I have a 95 4runner with a 97 motor going in. I am thinking that I will need to mate the tach, battery power, and fuel gauge wires together. If anyone can help me figure out what other wires need to be connected, I would really appreciate it. I have been staring at the harness diagrams for days......my head hurts. Also any I can get about figuring out the wires would be appreciated. Thanks.

Here is what i did when i started. My 3.4 computer had 4 plugs 3 where from the engine harness that i did not touch, the other one brached off to the dash and other things. So i took that plug and figured out what it was, like IH2 or Ik2 , mine was e5, which ever one it was, figured out the number of the pins and made a chart with the colors, and and x for empty spots.
IK2
1.B-R
2.x
3.Y-B

I also did that with the one plug from the 3.4 harness that went to the body harneness. Mine was called IK2.

I did the same thing for the two body harness plugs from the 4runner (IH1, IH2)

After i had all 4 plugs charted out with the pin location and wire colors, I went on the EWD's and found them and wrote beside it where and what the wire was.
(just examples since i cant remember the exact ones)
IK2
1.B-Y EFI
2.B-W starter relay
3.X
Some of them it took a while to find, but once i had all the charts done i just started matching wires from the 3.4 plugs to the 3.0 plugs.
(example)
IK2 IH1
1.B-W starter relay to 5.B-W starter relay

Once you have the wires matched up, you can just remove the pins from the 3.0 body harness plugs(IH1,IH2) and (remove from 3.4 plugs to make sure labeled) insert the 3.4 wire in to the corresponding spot on the 3.0 plugs. Then you can just plug the 3.0 plugs with the 3.4 wires in them in to the body harness.

If i remember right, one of the plugs from the 3.0 body harness will be igniton and starter and efi stuff like that, and the other will be guages and a/c at least that is how mine was.

But once you have some kind of chart made up with the pins locations and color broken down it makes it a ton easier. Dntdad gave me a tip, you can use adobe acrobat and actually search the EWD's for plugs or wire colors, helps a lot.

Also what i did was try to figure out the most important ones first like efi and ign, +B, then move on to gauges and stuff once you know they worked.

Alot of people remove both harnesses and make a skinny harness with only the ones they need. For mine i did it all while it was in the truck, just so i was sure it all worked and i did not remove a wire i needed from the 3.4 harness, then once was all good i removed all unnecessary wires.

Well anyways i hope this helps a little, if any questions fell free to pm me, or if you need a specific EWD. Good luck and trust me you will eventually figure it out.

What transmission?

What ecm?

What harness?

Makes a big difference as the 97 4Runner motor is an anomoly.

Exactly as Sam described is what I would do. Focus on functions of the wires rather than colors. Most are the same, but not all. For example, find the water temp wire on your 3.4 diagram, then on the 3.0, cut and solder together. One down.

Most of the colors will be the same but for example the EFI IGNwire is W-R on the 92ish on one and W-L on the 97.

Get a few figured out and post back if you get stuck. Lots of guys here to help.

This might be a dumb question, but would of just be easier to swap in the dash harness from the 97? How much work would it be to make that work?

trust me....that would be a bitch.

Just stick with the basics. Match up what you need to make run, have gauges, etc.

I had a friend who swapped the dash in, he had to take a lot of time to make it look good, hours and hours maybe even a couple days if i remember right. There was other guy who did one i saw and it looked awful. It just depends, like dntsdad said, just match them up. If you send me a chart of your wires and pinouts, i can identify some of them probably to help get you started.

Okay. I had all (6) plugs detailed out. I'm kinda thrown for a loop because between the two years harnesses I have 9 wires showing related to the neutral/park switch and none of them are the same color. Also is the +B related to the evidence system. That is what I tied it to and I just want to make sure.

You should have a +b and an EFI on both sides of the harness(the 3.4 and 3.0) that should tie together. On my particular swap, i had to look at several different years EWD on the 3.4 side. One plug was on a 1999 EWD and the other was on a 2001 EWD, the truck was a 2000, so just look at several close years.

I am getting confused. When I look for efi, I find all of them next to 15a fuses. When you mention efi, is that for the electronics or the fuel injection. I can't find that wire or terminal for the life of me if its felt injection. Also, I can only find +b coming out of the ecm. Is that the only mention of it I will find?

Okay, so on the IH1 plug you have pin #10, which is B-G, that is the pin location you stick the 3.4 wire in. The B-G wire goes to the EFI fuse, and then to the EFI relay, and from the EFI relay to the COR, which controls your fuel. The problem i am having is on the 97 EWD the wire you need is B-W, which comes off a plug on the computer,E8 or E12, i am not 100% sure which one. I noticed you have three charts for the 3.4. On mine i had one main body harness plug and one plug off the computer. What plugs do you have? let me know and i can try to further assist.

As for the +B , also on your IH1 plug i see you have it labeled pin location #16. "I looked on the 3.4 EWD, you should have one lead in the II3 body harness plug and another lead branching off to the actual computer plug (the E8 or E12.) What i did on mine was i connected all three together, i mad it like a Y, the two 3.4 ends in to the one 3.0 end which goes into the pin location 16 on your IH1 plug. You can rob factory splice points from you old 3.0 harness, that is what i did.
