I see a lot of threads on dropping a 5vz into older pickups, but what about swapping out a 2rz out of an 01-04 tacoma for a 5vz? The idea sounds simple, but isit?

I believe you'll need to move the motor mounts back a little bit, You'll want the whole engine harness and ECU from the donor and all the acessories (PS PUMP, Alternator...) all that basically the long block because they will not change over.

Theres some more info in this thread

You will need to get a R series transmission. Try to get a conversion with transmission from a 2wd Tacoma and you will be set. 2wd 3.4s have a shallow front sump oil pan rather than a deep sump front pan.

Yea, I read that one. Unfortunately, he's not doing the swap. He can simply buy a truck equipped with the engine. The truck I want to build never had the 3.4 option. (2wd base tacoma)

Great, Thanks for the TTORA thread. It is helpful. So, it looks like I need a donor for the engine, and tranny too. It looks to me my best bet would to get a v6 prerunner model as the donor truck. You guys agree? Would a 4x4 model pose a problem if one was available? Also, it looks to me I should pick up a donor truck with the same kind of transmission (5spd/AT) as the truck recieving the powertrain.

Is your truck a 5speed or a automatic? What would you rather have? Why would a prerunner be your best option? Other than the motor mounts this is a bolt in.

I have not purchased the vehicle yet. I am actively looking for one now. However, I am assuming if my new truck is an automatic, it make sense to get a donor truck that is also automatic.

I was assuming a prerunner model would be an ideal donor because there is no transfercase just like my 2wd pickup. But... If I were to come across a 4wd model, could I still use that? Is the transmission the same between the prerunner, and 4wd model? Just a T-case attached to the 4wd? That is my question... Thanks

All the prerunners Ive ever seen are automatics. They are 2wd but have all the same suspension as a 4wd, so the oil pan would be different, You want to get a oilpan from a straight up 2wd non pre runner pickup. I have one pm me if you end up needing it.

Are you saying the oil pan in the prerunner model is too large, and will be in the way of something on the little truck?
