Some of the early 5vz's did have a recall on the headgaskets. X01 was what toyota called it, but I looked around breifly and couldnt find anything on it anymore. I wouldnt worry about that when buying your engine (I didnt) but if you are worried I think it was only the 1996 engines that had that recall on it, all of the others got the new headgaskets.

As far as the wreck, I was going maybe 10mph at the most. I dont know haw fast he was going but maybe 35-40??

Good write up man. Looking at the accident pics.. had you not been lifted as much as you were.. the damage would have been worse. Looks like the ford dove under you.

I agree, the lift did help as well as the bumper. Had either one not been there the truck would have been totaled.

Also glad your truck isn't mashed like that Ford... how fast were they going?

I talked with the guy who does my engine machine work about the 3.4 headgasket issue. He said that the earlier ones as far as he knew, had some external seeping issues, but that a person could see the seepage, looking like a white crust where the head and block meet. So even if the headgasket was leaking, the coolant would not be entering the combustion chamber. This guy also owned a supercharged 3.4 tacoma.

hey jason, was there a specific reason you went with the 95-00 model engine? i am looking at an 01-04 3.4 for an 80 pickup. the price is right. just wondering if i should go with an older engine though. . . thanks

No big reason that I went with that engine. Thats just the one that I had found at the right price at the right time.

Engine fitment.

Will the 5vz-fe fit into most smaller Toyota tucks? I have a rotted t100 and am looking into getting something that would have came stock with a 22r or re.

Great job on the truck, looks fantastic. How does the 3.4 perform compared to the 22re?

I'm starting a swap in my 93 4X4 pickup. I have a complete 96 T100 4X4 for parts and such. I'm gonna install the 3.4 and 4X4 5 speed transmission. The crossover pipe tutorial is amazingly helpful. The biggest issue I expect to have is mating the wiring harness to my truck.. I have the complete engine harness and ECM. There are about 18 wires on two plugs that have to be crossed.
My opening question is: Are the wiring color codes the same from the 93 22RE to the 3.4 from the T100?
Any wiring suggestions will be helpful.
thanks in advance,
Scott

Most people pay to get onto TIS (Toyota information source or something like that) and download all of the wiring diagrams from their truck and the donor truck and then study them and create a spreadsheet of what needs to be done. The wiring colors are not all the same
