Greetings from the great white north.

Have an 88 extra cab pickup that I am tearing apart to paint the frame and generally rebuild the truck. I am unable to remove the carriage bolts that hold the box onto the frame brackets. I have been playing with this for a couple of days and no luck. The top of the bolt which is rounded just spins in place. There seems to be some kind of square bracket or washer (which almost ripped my finger off with impact wrench) Rusted or welded together.

I got the PB Blaster hints from the other threads. But how can I get the bolt to stop spinning in place. I have tried vice grips, wrenches and various other metal objects to block the turning of the bolt and square washer...no luck. Any help would be appreciated.

 

try tack welding it. if that wont work then heat the nut with a torch

 

I have a small mig welder. Will try to get the tip up there.

If all else fails, cut it with a torch or sawzall. Then you can put in new bolts.

 

I cut all the bolts as I was disassembling the bed of my 54 Chevy Pick Up.
Just use the abrasive wheel air tool. Took about 15 minutes to get all the bolts cut. You can definitely get new hardware.

 

Yeah, don't waste your time. Cut it out.

Thanks for all of the great responses. This site rules. The brackets are really tight and the bolts difficult to access...but I will find a way.
