Not sure where it is on the 3rd Gen, but I've replaced alternators on 3 Toys I've owned (1 went bad, the other two were upgrades). They were all pretty easy. You need to loosen the screw that allows you to loosen the belt, then it is just two other fasteners to remove and you can pull it out. Not sure what Toyota charges for a new alt, but you can get a higher amperage one from Mr. Alternator for around $235 shipped. Were you able to check yours out?

It really depends on how mechanically inclined you are, and what type of tools you own. You will need a decent socket and ratchet set, with extensions. You will also need a good set of metric wrenches.

Other than that, it's really easy. I would give myself (very mechanically inclined) about 1-hour to remove and replace it. I would allow 2-3 hours for someone that has never done one before.

I did mine (a 96) in about 90 minutes, with most of that time realizing that it wasn't moving because of an adjustment bolt that I couldn't see (it's below the alternator). At the time i did it, I had some mechanical experience on my truck, but this was the first major part to replace.

In short, it's very straight forward to do. One tip, disconnect the battery when you do it... The cable that comes off of the alternator runs straight to the positive terminal on the battery, and is very easy to short out.

Cost wise, the reason I did mine was to get a higher capacity alternator (I went to a 150amp model from the stock 90amp) and I paid $235 shipped from http://www.mralternator.com. Tom's ("Tom" is Mr. Alternator) a great guy, selling a fine product for a good price. Plus, you can have the alternator powerdercoated in a number of different colors. His alternators are 100% direct drop-in replacements.

Good luck!

Here was my experience/writeup...basically be careful that you dont move the bottom mounting bracket. I couldnt get it back in until i banged it up with a hammer.
