Rebuild engine or not

I am having a hard time figuring up the total costs for rebuilding my 3VZE. Either I can buy a reman one from three different companies for around $1800 with $400 core or I can rebuild. The problem is I do not know exactly what should be done or could be done if you wanted too. If anyone has done this could you give me a good list as to what I should have done so I can see what I want to do? Oh should I just do a top end rebuild or do the whole kit and caboodle?

I can't help you on the rebuild costs, but I may be able to help support that $1800 short block you found.

I figure it's from Orient, right? I was just witness to one of their engines going into a friend's truck and it was a nice clean experience. The folks at Orient were awesome to deal with.

The engine did have a small oil leak, but was fixed "in the field" and with the full support and concern of Orient. The cause itself is a bit up in the air as to if it was an issue with the block or with re-assembly at Orient. None-the-less, they took care and responsibilty for it and worked well with the installer to come to a local solution.

You may know this, but if not, their $1799 price includes shipping to you _and_ back to them. And, their $425 core isn't charged until after 30days of the engine being shipped. A lot of places I talked to charged the core up front and then reimbursed it on return.

For other folks reading the thread, this is their contact info:
Orient Engine
32 Hammer Drive
Falmouth, KY 41040
859.654.1754
http://www.orientengine.com/toyotaprice.html

The engine we got was the "TO3024" which is a 3VZE (3.0L), SOHC, RWD. It included the hydraulic timing belt adjuster and a new water pump

Warranty is 36 months or 12,000 miles.

The price was $1799, which included shipping both ways. Their core charge is $425 but is only billed if the old engine isn't returned within 30 days.

When I replace my engine, it will come from Orient. How much would the shipping alone run on an engine one way?

What exactly is wrong with your engine?
How many miles does it have?
Have you ever rebuilt a motor before?

I did all my engine work myself but Im not exactly a novice either. I could help you with estimating cost and where to get the best value but thats all pointless if you cant do the work. I wish I had some performance 3.0 dyno numbers for you but I have 700 miles to go before it see's anything north of 3k RPM. I can tell you that Im probably into my motor for about $1800 if that helps.

Nice truck by the way...See any similaritys??

Greetings,
When I did my 3.0 last year, my total costs for rebuilding it were around $2000, that was with all the goodies, I had my heads ported & polished. Oversize valves, HP injecors, Supra AFM...... and on!
I did all the work myself, If you had to pay the labor it would probably be over $3000! It depends what you want, With $1800 you can rebuild it and get some more ponies out of her.
I put all this money into it just to guy buy a Tacoma! I hope I get over 300,000 miles out of her like I did my 3.0!
Good Luck!

Ummm, that $1799 price for a rebuilt 3.0 includes shipping both ways.

I was billed $1799 to get the new engine to me and the old core back. total. nothing more.

I know. I was just trying to figure what the cost of the engine minus the shipping.

I think that's why they include the shipping so you don't have to worry about how much it is.

New 22RE

I built a new 22re. I purchased a brand new shortblock on ebay for $600 and then collected a new timing cover and set, oil pump, water pump, cam shaft, rocker arms, gasket set, fuel filter, front pipe, o2 sensor, wires, cap, rotor, plugs, ....think that was it...for about $1,200 - $1,300 including the machine work on the head. I'd say it was worth it now that I'm done, but I wouldn't do it again. I am a novice, and all the time I spent researching this project probably would have been better spent with my family.

Anyway...just thought I'd chime in, Wade
