Noisy tailgate
#1
I did a search on this and didn't find anything yet.
I have a 94 Toyota pickup 4x4 22RE, 5spd, 175,000 miles.
My tailgate rattles like crazy. It looks like there should be some kind of plastic clip or something that keeps it from rattiling.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Joel

My 4Runner originally had plastic clips on the side of the tailgate that broke off many years ago. I think the plastic clips are there to keep the metal links from rattling against the tailgate and bed opening. Years ago I placed some adhesive velcro loop strips on the links to take up the gap. Not the prettiest solution, but it got rid of the rattling.

my tail gate on my 89 PU rattles a little which is unstopable/ when you open the tail gate there are 2 bolts on the bottom that could be loose, also there are 2 plactic clips that hold the (folding arm-metal part that holds tailgate up when opened) off of the bed to reduce rattleing that is probably what is gone, you could jimmy rig something or just buy new ones at the dealer and it should stop

Thanks Guy for the suggestions. I thought those clips should either be putting a little tension against the gate or somehow keeping it from rattling. They are of course broken and I would need to get some froma dealer because I am sure they break on all of the trucks.
thanks again.
thanks again.

can you rattle the gate itself, or is it tight? if it's tight, can you rattle the arms at the sides? if those rattle a lot, get out your ph#1 screwdriver and tighten them as far as they'll go. there's a keyed end to the arm that keeps them from becoming so tight that you can't open or close the gate. padding, as clint said above, is a workable stopgap until you can find a more permanent fix.

You could always buy the plastic clips from the dealer, but they will likely break again. Plus, they probably want an arm and a leg for them.
My temporary fix with pads on the links has been working for many years. And, it's pretty cheap. Just my $.02
Maybe you could do something like coat the side links with Plasti Dip?

Photo..the gate itself rattles. There may be some noise from the links too. I have not looked at them. I will check them out tonight.
894runner I will try some kind of pad or plasti coat on the links first before buying the clips from the dealer.
I was thinking ( I know scary) that if the gate is rattling in the latch maybe I could use the welder and build up the latch hole just a bit so it fit tighter.
what do you think?

Buck01,
I don't think I'd use the welder to build up the latch hole. You should play with the latch in the tailgate to see if it is working properly. I think mine has a couple of stops when it rotates around the latch pin. It should work something like the latch on your doors even though it looks different. One latch grabs to keep the tailgate shut, but you will get a little bit of movement. If you push the tailgate harder, the second latch grabs and holds the tailgate tight with the bed. Does that make sense?

I used some adhesive backed foam to stop my rattle. Kinda like the kind people use as a buffer between camper shell and bed.
