idle sucks

alright Im needing some advice. my idle is fine until i drive it a bit, so basicly once it warms up, it drops and surges from 600 to 1100rpm when in neutral. when the clutch is in its fine though. all my hoses are good so im thinking tps? any ideas?

Did you mess with the tps lately? Adjusting those is not fun at all!

Do you have a vaccum guage? Check and see if the bvsv is opening the egr valve at idle after the engine is warm.

If I were you, i would first check to see if the ECU is sending any codes.
In case you dont know where the check connector to short is : click here The check engine light will flash, count the flashes to tell what the problem is. If there are no long pauses between flashes(or just a consistent flash), its normal.

Uhhh... I dunno if this helps, but my brother's '95 Saturn did the same thing, raggedly idling after warm-up and just generally running weaker, and his EGR was totally spoiled... He gave it a good cleaning, and it was good as new.
Just a thought.

Sefus- I went through the same dam thing with my 92. I repalced the TPS and it didnt fix it. I pulled the idle adjustment screw and cleaned it and the TB out...........good as new.

TPS_ $98.00

Carb leaner_$4.50

Go figure!

well i worked on it today. I ran the codes and according to Haynes I pulled a 4, 5, and 11. so I took the TPS off a spare manifold i had and went to take the one off the engine, realized i couldnt get to the bottom screw so took off the t-stat and hoses right before i realized it would be easier to take off the throttle body. when im putting the Tstat back on, one of the bolts strips out. i tried a heli coil but it didnt take so my t-stat housing is basically being held together by one bolt and a lot of form-a-gasket. got the tps changed out though and it seems to be a little better, but now my eyes are glued to my temp guage and rearview mirror for when I start losing radiator fluid. If its not one thing is another.

I did check the EGR vacuum thingamabob and the filters were pretty gross. the manual refered to them when you're getting crappy milage so all those looking to get that .11 better mpg you might want to clean or replace those little filters.

thanks for all the help guys.

is your tps set right? it takes some time rather than just "changing it out"...took me about 10 tries before i got correct readings.

After doing the head gasket, and putting everything back together, I tried this same thing. The problem is that the tps is "very" sensitive. We're talking thousandths of an inch. Follow callmej75's advice and visit Roger's site. While you're there, check out the rest of his site. The guy is amazing. You won't regret it.
