I'm helping a friend with her 86 SR5 4x4 truck with the 22R-E engine (US emissions), manual tranny, 231k miles.

She's getting a CEL. I have a Haynes manual which explains the procedure for jumpering the T and E terminals of the Check Engine Harness Connector and then counting the blinks of the CEL. The manual says the connector is located near the ignition coil. I can't find the darn thing anywhere. There are a lot of loose terminal connectors near the ignition coil but nothing is labled. The manual also says the ECU should be at the rear of the engine compartment on the passenger side but there is nothing there. Just wondering if the manual is screwed up or if I'm missing something.

not sure about the 22re, but with my 3.0 its on the passenger side fender well, might wanna check there. Im sure someone else will let you know.

Boy I looked everywhere at every connector I could find in the engine compartment. I looked in the fuse box too. But nothing with a label of T or E or any label. I don't think the Haynes is very good in that respect and the wiring diagram wire colors didn't seem to match many of the items I was looking at. The wiring diagrams were vague about which model years they covered. But it does have an excellent section on the emissions system...usually that chapter doesn't help much.

 

Thanks 4Crawler....that link helped a lot. It appears that the connector cirlced in cyan (blue for us normal people) is the one. I see it in my photo...it's not in the rubber holder but just hanging loose. I didn't see any labels on the connector at all. How are we supposed to know these are the T and E terminals? Once again...the Haynes leaves a lot to be desired. But you get what you pay for I guess.

I have a question... same as yours, which one is the T terminal in the older style connector? Or do you just short it across itself?

 

Connector is circled and identified on the photo on the web page posted earlier. There are two terminals inside, short them together. Makes no difference which is T and which is E1 or whatever, a jumper wire between the two could care less, a short is a short. Connect the two terminals together however you see fit. A paper clip, a length of wire (what gauge? makes very little difference, whatever you have will probablyh work) , or I've wired mine to a switch, makes no difference. Easy connector to identify, it is the only ROUND connector with two terminals. There is also a ROUND connector with one terminal (O2 sensor test point) and a ROUND 3 terminal connector and a RECTANGULAR 2 terminal connector (fuel pump test jumper). They are all different in shape/number of terminals. Find the ROUND one with 2 terminals, shove something conductive into both and that is all that you have to do.
