head cracked..?

ive got water (itd be coolant, but its all gone) leaking from #3 cylinder in both intake and exhaust sides. Itd be a foolharded wish to still say that my gasket gave out, huh? Ive looked around for deals on heads, but nothing under 400 and its really bumming me out. But, with 263k on the block, it might be better just to throw a whole new engine in there. Opinions or advice, anyone?

There is a bolt hidden that goes straight down. It is forward of the chain, and is usually in a little puddle of oil so it isn't visible. It goes into the front of the timing cover.

I'm fresh off a tear down and rebuilt of your engine, so if you run into any problems there just ask.
I had one head bolt that was so caked up with carbon that I damn near twisted the head of the bolt right off.
That's pretty much the worst thing I had on the tear down.

I'm hearing on the head prices. My 94 shot one of the spark plugs right out of the head last year and the nearest Toyota dealer want $2500 for parts and labor to fix. Needless to say I had it sleeved for that plug. Sure was a lot cheaper.

Of course impact wrench is best, but a trick I heard that sounds decent it this.
Put your breaker bar on the crankshaft with the handle resting on a block of wood on the left-hand side (airbox side) of the engine bay. You'll of course need to remove your fan, radiator, etc. Then pop the starter momentarily and it's supposed to back right off.
I've never tried this, so if you do, do it at your own risk. I like the impact wrench method best.

yeah, that method sounds a little risque...im not too worried about it right now...looks like my head gasket (original @ 264,142 miles thank you very much!) looks like it blew through the water port part of the head right next to the #3 cylinder wall...im hoping and praying the head isnt cracked...doesnt look to bad warpage wide though...its pitted, hopefully machining will get it back to where it needs to be. But, i think Im gonna throw some new pistons and definitely definitely valves in there...anyone got any good suggestions maker-wise? im also toying with a camshaft idea if i dont have to go new-head route, because im alittle more than slightly strapped for cash . Any experiences? Suggestions for lobe and durations and such? seen about 10 in all different makers and different setups...which is the best in all of your opinions?
