Front Diff Prob

Hey Guys... I don't know if you remember... but a while back I started a thread about how when I had it in low 4 it didn't seem to be pulling from the front. Anyway... I jacked up the front yesterday after work... after putting it in low4 and first gear... I thought I'd try spinning the wheels... and they spun. Spun the right... left spun opposite direction... spun the left... right spun the opposite direction. But the drive shaft was not moving at all. I've sort of concluded that it's the pinon... tell me what you guys think... THANKS!

The driveshaft won't spin if you spin the wheel and the other one spins... you need to spin both in the same direction, or at least spin one and hold the other. The driveshaft should spin then...

Drain your front diff oil and see if there are chunks in it. That is a good quick way to see if there might be serious problems with gears in there... Or just drop out the 3rd member and inspect.

My first guess would be ADD problems, but I don't know what you've checked on it...

ADD would be my guess. Check your vacuum lines. That is most likely the culprit. If the problem was the pinion, you would most definitely have other symptoms.

Ok cool. I'll probably drain it this weekend. What weight of oil goes in the front diff? Actually, it should say in the manual, right? Thanks!

Try spinning just the passenger side, with the driver side wheel still on the ground. That axle is always connected so the drive shaft should spin if the pinion is OK.

Thanks for all the input. I actually think I may have a prob with the ADD. While I was under the truck (before I jacked it up), I notices a hose thing connected to the transfer case. It was kind of loose and there was what looked like fresh fluid on my undercarriage. I've never seen a leak on the ground though. Is that an ADD line?

Bump! How's it going guys... I jacked up the truck... put jack stands on the four corners... put it in 4lo and started her up. Anywho... My question is this... Is it normal for just the two passenger side wheels to turn while they are spinning free? The front/rear passenger side spun great and the driver's side front and rear sporatically jolted in the same direction. I'm thinking I may just be having some clutch slippage when driving in a straight line in 4lo. I'm not sure when the last time the clutch was changed. I should probably do that soon... It may still be the original one! YEESH! Also, just to check, I'll check the front diff oil and the transer oil this weekend. Thanks again guys!

One wheel in the front and one in the back spinning sounds like it should be fine. You should only see all 4 wheels spin if your locked (that's the whole point of locked diffs). If your ADD is broken, when you have 4wd engaged and you spin one tire, the other shouldn't spin (because it's not connected). You also wouldn't see the driveshaft spinning either, as the nub axle would probably be spinning. Good luck with your problem.

Cool cool, thanks! I must just be crazy or something... ??? Hahahah. I'm just going to get a new clutch when I swap my engine out. I should be able to do it pretty quick.
