Reading the owner's manual it indicates that Toyota will replace the oxygen sensor at no charge (parts & labor). This is in the maintenance section of the manual. I have a 1988 4Runner.

Just curious if that is ONE time at 80,000 or if it is still the case and they will do it EVEVY 80000 (can't imagine that it is).

 

Call them and ask.
That's all that you can really do and it does'nt hurt to ask.

Since we are on the subject of O2 sensors...

I just found out my truck has California emissons and need to replace my O2 sensor. After price checking at URD I found that the Cali part is more than twice as much as the non-cali part .

Does anyone know if I can use the non-cali O2 sensor since I do not live in California?

 

etg, nope the CA computer will flip out if you try and use a Fed spec o2 sensor......

Talked to Toyota on the phone and they did some research and told me that you only get one freebie and the mileage has to be 80000 or just under to get the free replacement (I'm waaaaaayyyyyy past that). I might try to hit up a dealership to see if they will go for it since I know its never been done on my vehicle.

 

"gohawks", "etgunner", you guys could try to save a few (read as: bunch of) dollars by pulling the 02's out and burning the buildup off of them with an acetylene torch, scrubbing them down with a steel brush and perhaps spraying them down with some quick drying, electric parts cleaner to remove whatever remaining residue, and then popping them back in.
It either may or may not be necessary to pull the fuse to reset the circuit, depending on your year, although I'm not certain.

 

Do you know where to get an acetylene torch if you don't have one and don't wanna dish out the same amount as 2 o2 sensors for the torch? Like renting it or something

I just researched some, and I found out that you can a simple home depot torch and a propane gas cylinder, about the same temperature. You could also use MAPP gas with the same torch, but I hope that doesn't burn the sensor @ 5500C . If anyone has more information about this, please post

 

This may or may not work and requires some technique to do (has been covered already in a few threads) because the part you need to clean is actually underneath the tip of the O2 sensor (not the tip itself). The only no brainer way, which is guaranteed to work is to replace with a new one. You can bench test the sensor with a torch to see if the sensor is indeed the problem before you replace it (but for most, if you do the work to get it out, you might as well replace it too).
