I replaced the fan clutch today, was chirping, rattling, etc, and it's still doing it. Any thoughts on what in the heck is going on? I was sure it was the fan clutch. Thanks in advance.

 

Replacing the mechanical fan clutch and fun assembly would be best and save you alot of $$$$

Chirping and rattling sound like symptoms of a bearing that is about to seise up and go to bearing heaven. You may be looking at a new water pump or alternator in your near future.

When a fan clutch goes bad the fan is almost completely locked to the pulley that drives it and the water pump. When mine went bad it started throwing the belt off the pulleys at higher RPMs. I'd pull over and put the belt back on and at a certain RPM i'd get thrown off again, once taking the Power Steering belt with it as well.

 

I forgot to post what I did to remedy my situation...

I got a 2 speed Ford fan for $10 at A-1 here in town. That fan came in Sables and a handful of Lincolns as well, all with the 3.8 V6. When you open the hood and see "3.8 V6" in giant font staring up at you from the top of the motor, you know you have the right donor.

The cheapest new mechanical clutch I could find was something like $70 or $80 from AutoZone. Save $$$ and gain a tiny bit of performance at the same time, Go electric!

I'm not saying this is your problem. You obviously have a different problem than I had.

What do you drive? What year? What motor?

 

what year and engine do you have??

i believe the 3.0 v6 has an idler bearing underneath the fan (where it mounts to the engine) that is prone to break or wear out (its not actually attached to the water pump but its runs on top of it)

 

It's an 84 w/ 22r. It has me stumped.

 

I think 22re's have that extra idler pulley also. It may be bad or the water pump could be. The only way to check for sure is to remove the fan and clutch. Put the clutch nuts back on with 4-6 washers under them to take up the slack. Start the engine and listen to where the chirp is coming from. This helps to hear without the fan blasting in your face.

 

The 22r does have an idler pulley. Its the one close to the top of the engine. I had my bearing blow out (it was chirping) suddenly my truck slowed down and I smelled a gawdawful rubber burning.

Pulled over and saw the belt shaving away. Two days later I was flying to san diego, and while there, I bought a bearing at a hardware shop for $12. Bing bang boom. No problems since.

I think a toyota bearing is around $90

If this happens to you, loosen the bolt holding the pulley. It won't give as smooth a pulley movement as the bearing did, but it can get you home atleast.
