I cant figure it out.

I have a 92 4runner 3.0 auto. I cannot get the ignition to turn. I put the key in and the door chime comes on, but the key is locked. (yes its in park, and the wheel has no tension) The last couple of days it has kind of done this, but I just wiggle the shifter and it turns. Now nothing!

I tore down the counsol and found a slide switch that looks like it senses when the truck is in park, It receives no voltage ever when I put the VOM on it. I cleaned it and reinstalled it, nothing!

In the name of my four wheeling trip this weekend help me please any help is great!

 

try shaking the steering wheel a little bit. Maybe the wheel lock kicked in.

 

Thats happened to me before too. Its really annoying when it does happen. I just kept wiggling the wheel. The second time it happened, I was lucky because I had remote start, so I started it that way, and everything unlocked itself. Im not sure what causes this, but try wiggling the wheel, maybe try adjusting the height? (im not sure if your year has an adjustable wheel or not.) Maybe a worn key too.

 

thanks guys I have a remote start and Ill try that, but I think the problem is in the shifter. As far as the worn key goes I hope not, its my only key and a copy is likely to be worn as well, keep the ideas comin. I got to get this thing going by this weekend.

 

when this happened to me i tried every thing...no avail.... then as the tow truck guy popped the cap by the shifter to put it into neutural......everything unlocked and then he tried the key and wala it started......he still charged me the full $85.00 service fee.....and to this date that hasn't happened again......

 

get the key code from either driver or passenger lock cylinder and have the stealer cut you a couple of new keys. that should help solve your problem, worn keys can be a real pita.

There was a thread a couple of weeks ago regarding the same thing. It was something to do with the shifter interlock. Search back a month or so and see what you can find...

What happens if you shift into neutral and try to start it?

I tried the neutral thig and it doesnt work.

 

If you go the dealer with proof of ownership (I think you need that) and the VIN they can cut a brand new key-its really handy. The parts counter guy did it for me when I first got the truck (and I discover that I couldn't unlock any of the doors).

I got it. I sprayed some (locksmith approved) lube into the ignition and wiggled the key alot and it came free. Now it is starting to get a little smoother, however, I can still feel it bitting on one of the tumblers. I will probably need a new key or a new cylinder in the future but for now I am going wheelin on Sunday!

 

doesnt sound liek a key problem, if grease worked, its the tumbler...

 

For what its worth, a locksmith suggested that lube my all of locks (didn't ask about the ignition) with Tri-flow on a pretty regular basis (they were stuck when I bought the truck). He told me it was better than lock-ease of anything like that.
