Cv Axle replacement

Cv Axle replacement

So I got my car on jack stands, the wheels off, a replacement cv, but I am having a hell of a time gettig the the bolts holding it to the diff loose. Its the passenger side. Everytime I try to get some leverage it rotates, I feel dumb, but I replaced the tie rods and idler arm today as well as some other minor maintence so I am tired. Any help would be appreciated. Also one of my outer tie rod had a nylock nut instead of the castle nut, will this be a problem?

yea, had the same problem with the cv.. had to get a frend with an open end to grab on to another nut to hold it in place and then hit them one at a time with the air gun to loosen them up... same thing while tightening it again. good luck.

The easiest way I found with the bolts on the CV shaft was to get someone to stand on the brakes, and then use a long breaker bar.

Well I loosened the bolts up with a breaker bar while my dad kept the wheel from turning. You could just slip the wheel back on and put 1 or 2 lugs in just so you can have somewhere to keep it from turning. You will need an assistant, of course. Good luck, those CVs are a biyatch to get off the diff. Every time you try to slide the studs out, it springs back in. Since you are replacing it anyway, there's no worry if you screw it up, so what we did was just take a pry bar and pry the crap out of it till it gave in. Good luck!

Wow, I think I posted that a millisecond after you did , Eric. Lol. By the way. Also, about that tie rod nut, It should be okay, being it is a locknut. The purpose of the castle nut is to have a cotter pin to keep it from backing off.

Oh also, rather than starting a new thread, where can I get the gaskets for the manual hubs. I tried autozone and they looked at me like I was retarded when I mentioned manual hubs, locking hubs, or anything related to that, the best they could do was sell me gasket material. Honestly I'm lazy and don't want to cut my own gaskets, where has everyone else gotten them?

You can either put the tranny into 4wd or lock the hubs with the tire on and put it back on the ground.

Also, remember the studs are press fit with splines into the diff side. Be sure you're trying to loosen the nuts and not the studs.

I got gaskets from the dealer, only a couple bucks. You can probably use silicone but you might end up taking them off a couple times for various reasons so I'd have to re-apply every time.

i had a mechanic friend do it once and he only lifted the side that needed the cv replaced that way the tire didnt turn...? dunno
