'Sup, kids.
A couple of years ago, Pat Goss (Motorweek TV) showed a jumper cable that connected between two cars 12 volt outlets instead of at the batt terminals. IT seemd safer, easier, more and compact. I want to get some now but can't find anyplace that has them. Anybody ever seen these and can tell me where I can get'em?

I don't remember where I heard it, but somebody said they are junk and they don't work well. The bigger the cable the better and this was proven to me when one of my coworkers needed a jump. One guy had some relatively thin cables when they tried to start the dead car and it didn't do it. They played with the connections and everything but nothing worked. Then they used my cables and the car started on the first shot.

Think about the amount of draw needed to iump another vehicle. Then think about the size of wire leading to your cig. ligther. Do the math and save your money. There junk, and very miss leading.

Advise : save up $100.00 and buy a jump box. There are many brands of them. They have a gel type battery internally, and work really well.

i think i searched for cig car charger or something to that extent...but i think that's the best one i could find...doesn't sound like people like this idea??

Well it seems that these cig plug devices are more for charging than jumping (like the solar devices). I found a link for an interersting piece that you all might be interested in. Looks like it would make jumping a lot safer.

seems to that the auto industry would have created a standardized jump terminal by now that you could just plug into on another car, maybe include the cord with the car like a jack and spare...

I think if you look at all the jumper cables out there with plugs like that set you found, you'll find this type plug to be much more common.

What is that connector for, Shane? The SafeTPlug thing is supposed to some with two sets of clamps that you plug together to make the final connection - or is this grey plug in reference to the cigarette lighter thing?

That's the jack that I have on my front bumper It's nice to be able to use the cables without lifting the hood. Plus people don't ask to "borrow" my cables

OK, somebody else has one, so I want one now. Did the jack come installed on your ARB?

Nope. I found a tow truck supply house and bought a jack, wiring and cables from them. It's exactly the same set up that you see on tow trucks, cop cars and other service rigs.

That connector housing I linked is only part of the puzzle, there's both male and female pieces, and the matching contacts, as well as a few different handles and locking mechanisims available. They also come in a few different sizes for different amperage ratings. Most industrial electrical supply houses carry everything you'll need to build a setup or you can just pick up a kit from most truck shops which includes everything you need.

See, that 's what I'm talking about. There's already a plug in existence that the industry could standardize and install or at least offer. :mad:

From what i have seen of the cig to cig cables is that you plug it in for 20 mins then take it out and start you car, which is ok if you leave your lights on but is no good if the battery wont hold a charge , also you might get some one to give you a quick jumo but waiting for 20 mins? i think not.
I like the idea of the plug in ones and i thing that would be the best bet

i beleive the plug you guys are talking about can be found at most electrical warehouses too , we used them at work for hooking up 12 volt blowers and jumper cables and such . they are awesome .
