hows everyone doin?

does the a/c compressor on the 22re do anything else besides give you a/c?
its a huge amount of weight and parasitic drag providing i dont even use/want a/c. i asked a while ago about removing it completely and there is something about leaking toxins into the air so i will just leave it on. can i just remove the belt that drives the pulley though? or are there other things that this huge device does?

The A/C compressors job is solely to operate your air conditioning system. I would think the amount of parasitic drag on your engine would be very small unless the A/C is actually turned on. With the AC off, the compressor clutch is disengaged and just free-wheels. If you want to remove it anyway, you've got a couple of options:

1) Remove the belt - as long as that belt isn't powering any other accessories like the power steering pump or alternator. This will remove the engine drag you're concerned about. The benefit of this is you can always put the belt back on if you want A/C.

2) Take the truck to a shop and have the A/C system professionally purged. Then you can remove the compressor and related bracketry to save weight. However once you open and disassemble the system it'll be work to get it back together and working.

Its bad for the enviroment and illegal to purposely vent refrigerant. That being said if you were to, crack the lines, let the refrigerent vent, remove the compressor, do what you need to do with the belts, it wont hurt anything other then the enviroment and the fact you wont have AC anymore.......

 

If you get rid of it you will probably wish you had it back around july!If it works I would just leave it alone.If you have taller than stock tires taking the ac off of it aint going to make any difference.It also helps a great deal when you want to sell it.Just my 2 cents worth.Take care.

If you are sure you don't need the AC, turn the compressor into an on-board air setup.

Has anyone tried the front range offroad compressor? When I bought my truck, I noticed it had AC...however, never looked under the hood. Later I realized that the belt was not connected. Not really a big AC user (I find I get enough air with the sliding rear window, and side windows), but interested in ripping out all the AC stuff not needed, and run a compressor. Any ideas?
