22RE timing problem

i just put a new headgasket in and then put it all back together, ran rough so i adjusted the valves after warm to .008 intake and .012 exhaust. then timed it with a light. still ran rough, and clicked real bad. so i took adjusted the vlaves again a little tighter. this time it made the click quieter but still not running perfect. and now when i step on the throttle it sounds like its backfiring through the intake. what degree should i be timing it to? also when i plugged all the wiring in there was no plug for the green connector on the side of the block under the oil filter. what is the for and should it have something plugged into it?

What year is yours? On my 92 there is a sensor under the oil fliter that has a black boot and a yellow w/green stripe wire going to it. The wire comes from the same harness that connects to the stater and runs back to the tranny.

Are you sure you have the dist. indexed correctly? Not 1 tooth off. I had the same rough running as you when I put mine back together and had to re-index the distributer until I got it right.

I had the same problem and it was the distributor index off.

Are you figured out the problem yet?

Could even be 180 out. Is the rotor pointing to #1 plug wire with #1 cylinder TDC? Are you certain the TC was indexed properly when you put it back together? Also, if you adjusted the valves with either the TC or the distributor off, keep in mind its going to need the valves adjusted again after the re-indexing before it will run smooth.
