1988 22re 120,000 maintence?
what should be done?? and should toyota dealer do it?? and what would the price range be if a dealer does it.
Symptoms of the 88 22re as of right now
the timing chain was changed before we bought it. But i aint for sure. It rattles like a diesel engine when i start it and it has a ticking/rattling sound when i let off accelarator while driving down highway. The timing chain was checked when i had a clutch installed this past summer. they said it was fine. but it still has the ticking ratlling gurgling sound when i start it and when i let off the gas and sometimes right after i shift gears. it is my daily driver. please help

That rattling would be the timing chain guides...a common problem. They are plastic and wear out and break over time.
How much mechanical ability do you have? That will help us know whether to send you to the stealer or not.

I just purchased an 88 with 149,xxx on the clock. I also had the ticking, slapping, smacking, and every other noise imaginable. I am currently have having the timing chain replaced with new guides. I had to buy a new timing cover because the slapping timing chanin had almost ate through the cover. NOT GOOD. Make sure WHATEVER you do.....you do it soon. Catastrophic engine failure could insue! Either the chain will break....IE: Valves hit pistons, or, chain eats through cover and coolant gets into the oil and eats your bearings for an appetizer. You could make it to 149,xxx like me....or be sitting along side the road tommorow.
Oh yeh......since your will have to remove the head....GREAT TIME to mod!
If you take it to a dealer....they may be good enough where they dont remove the head.....but TOYOTA Factory reccomends you do. They might say they did....and not!

I also rebuilt the head.....My 88 was also "Diesaling" a bit. Mostly under acceleration. I was able to stop the sounds from the head with High Test Gas. But gas is not cheap....and these should run on Reg Pump gas.

First of all, get the guides fixed. While they are in there, you might as well have them replace the drive belts. Personally, that is all I would do at the dealer. But, you are in a unique situation. You may be able to squeak some savings out of them since they will be tearing into it anyway.
If your guides were ok, I would tell you to buy the Factory Service Manual and some tools. Then, get OEM parts and do the work yourself. Not only would you be that much more knowledgable in the end, but you would also have more tools and a sense of satisfaction.
Here is what I would take care of if I was you:
Timing Chain guides
Drive belts (if they look split when you turn them over)
Spark plugs
Timing adjust
Clean the TB
Clean the MAFS
Coolant flush
Trans fluid change
Diff fluid change
Transfer case - if you are 4wd
Oil change
Cap and rotor
Inspect plug wires
At the dealer that will run you around $700 or more. So, you be the judge. Is it worth it?
I think you should just have them do the guides. Then, buy all the other stuff and get the FSM and some tools.

I agree with everything he said do. use his list....and then systematically mark them off! Most of those you could do with some common sense!

My 88 is Red. No stripes. I painted the grey grill Black. Bumpers are Black.

i have the haynes manual and have read it. Right now i am in a bind because this is my daily driver and i commute to college. 26 miles there and 26 miles back. Right now i dont have a whole lot of time on my hands. I am gonna try and get someone to look at guides thursday or friday. Who makes the Best metal guides doa or engblder? Oh and everytime i mention something about my truck to my dad he gets mad most of the time. Cause i talk about my truck all the time i guess. How much would toyota charge to replace the guides or just to look at them????? thanks please help

Give a couple dealers a call and get a quote. Not sure where you are located, but you could do a search on google and call some East coast dealers toll free since they are open right now.
I am guessing $300 - $500 for everything. Let's see what they say.

You might also check if there are any Toyota or Japanese vehicle repair shops in your area. They should be able to do the timing chain and guides also. Ask them up front if you can bring in aftermarket metal chain guides. Most shops won't let you bring in your own parts (you dont bring your own beef to McDonalds, right). Parts are a portion of their profit, and then there is the warantee issue (is it your part, or their work that was bad). Toyota 22re engines do make a clatter noise from the valve adjustment that is hard to get out. Make sure that is not what you are hearing.
It isnt hard to remove the valve cover and look down the chain to see if the guides are bad (the guide on the drivers side is the one that breaks/wears out). Make sure you mark all the vacuum lines before taking off the valve cover. Sometimes at work, we take a digital pic or two before starting a major job to help with reassembly.
Post your location, maybe someone in your area can recommend a good shop.
You can also add your location to your profile and it shows on every post (like mine). If you don't want city, state, just use a general location (IE. western Washington)

Again...not sure where you are at....but my dealer wanted around $1000 for the chain and guides. Covers are about $275 (dealer price) if it is worn through....as mine was. honestly....dont know which metal guide is better? I do know DOA has a lifetime warrenty.
Parts for the chain and guides I figure would be no more than $350. The rest is labor!
Also.....since you basically have to do all the steps to replace the timing chain, just to replace the guides.....if you are unsure if the chain has been replaced in the past....go ahead and do it as well. The entire front of the engine has to come off anyways!

Not to jack the thread, but I think I'm going to get my timing belt replaced now, anything else I should do while it's in the shop?
