Are you happy with your swap?

1987 truck, 22r, was a sweet truck until head gasket and timing chain problems. Plus I am tired of the 22r with no power. I would love the 1uz, but I am also looking at the 3.4, 4.3, 2.7 and the Supra motor. I have read may threads. But I would like to know from those who have done one of these swaps if they are happy with their choice. And if not, what would they do different. I am in no hurry. I am looking for your opinions on your motor.

Thanks, Rod

Love my gm 4.3 cpi .
The good: easy to work on , get parts , fits in engine bay good. Good power.
Also kept the gm auto l460e transmission with toy transfer case, 4.7 t gears , Love it . I will never go back to stick

The bad : Gas milage about same as my toy 3.0 , 12 around town , 16 highway .
But my 4runner weights 5000 pounds with all the wheeling stuff.
Most everything has to be fabled up. Like fuel lines , power steering hose. i did my own motor mounts and t case mount. Not real hard but takes time and will cost more than you think . Nickel and dime kinda stuff.

I used :
Advanced adapters gm trans to toy t case. $500
Painless wiring harness $300 with coupon .
Rebuilt my motor $1500
Exhaust front to back with cat $800
$
$$
$$$
$$$$
I could have done it cheaper but i want a good clean swap and not cut corners.
Would i do again......
hell Yes. i can pass traffic now!!
I would rethink the toy 3.4 swap a little bit more but i really wanted a gm 4.3. Also it up to your driving style .
Hope this helps some.

Been looking at the 4.3. Seems like a popular one. Any specific year for the 4.3? Not worried about the time, planning the whole summer for this swap. Is the 1uz more difficult?

Turbo Diesel, ok which one?

Thanks for the replies.

the OM617 is a good motor, 4bt cummings, or the MWM hs 2800. All are TD and I know the om617 and 2800 are mechanical injection (stupid diesels) and are stupid reliable.

Im in the middle of swapping in a vortec 4.3 out of a 98 truck into my 4runner. So I cant say how I feel about the swap, but my first truck was basically identical to the donor truck and I love the motor. Thats why I chose the 4.3 route.

1992 to 94 gm 4.3 CPI 195 hp came with auto trans . Need to modify hanness if you don't want the auto .
Up to 1995 4.3 tbi stock 160 hp , heads don't flow good .
You can put 96 + heads on older block , intake and carb and get 200 hp

I swapped a 2jzgte and am really happy with it. Its a little too powerful with all of the bpu's just north of 400hp. Its a blast to drive and drift

Thanks for the diesel and 4.3 clarifications. Still doing a lot of reading on the issue. Wow Blake, I'm not really looking for turbo, but that is nice! What did that come out of?

Thanks again for the replies, Rod

I'm interested in hearing how happy folks are going from 22RE to 2RZ/3RZ. Marlin makes it sound like a worthwhile swap and there is some decent aftermarket support, like from ORS and toyonlyswaps

O.K. People, let me know what you love about your motor...or not. I am at the point where I do something nice or just continuing slugging on with the 22r ,after some fix'in.( the truck is parked) I just want something doable with power, and hopefully with something with bolt on parts I am learning to weld!

My Plan, Pull motor, paint, reinstall motor....

Thanks, rod

Red face

I like staying in the Toyota family.

I have the 3.4 in a 92 4Runner lets say I made a big mistake with who I trusted to do the swap.

Now that I worked all the bugs out and fixed the poor workmanship I love it.

Yes there was a time I cursed the engine and would have gone back to a simple 22rec

Even though I had all the parts to do a 7MGTE swap I am going with another 3.4 only being held up lack of funds.

Thanks Wyoming9, wife has the 3.4 in her runner and I like it. I'm just tired of the 22 r/re. Problems and no power, I don't want to fix it I wish I could hire some expert here to do a swap. My truck has been parked here in Vegas for a month I just don't know what do do. I'm riding the big motorcycle to work every day until I decide. Maybe I will just repair the chain and sale the truck and give up on the yota dream.

Thanks, Rod

Size: 132.9 KBI have a 7mge swapped '85 extra cab 4x4. I love it! I was originally wanting to put in my 1uz but it wasn't ready to go when my motor went. I just happened to have a freshly rebuilt 7m sitting in my shed so in it went. I didn't have any hood/firewall clearance issues that others have run into. I cut the frame mounts off with a sawzall and re-welded them back on to match the 7m mounts. (I didn't have any 5m motor side mounts. Alternator plugged into stock connector. I straightened out the power steering pressure hose to connect it on the pass. side. I moved the battery to the drivers side. Only about 5 wires needed to get it fired up.

I like my 3.4 swapped truck, I'm doing the same swap but with an auto trans in my 4runner if that says anything.

I'm very happy with my 3.4 swap. I wanted to stay Toyota and didn't need a high revving engine.

The 3.4 was designed for a truck and stock is plenty of reliable power for me. There is the super charger option for those who want more.

Everybody that sees it thinks it looks factory. I have no regrets.

Thanks everyone, the 4.3 and the 7mge look great. Is the performance about the same?
