I take only the most important things, as too much recovery gear makes me a little too brave...

2 tow straps for when 1 can't reach.
A full sized shovel to drain the swamp my neighbor gets stuck in with his stock TJ.
And most important of all, my wife an 16month old boy!

What type do you guys use? I saw one at Harbor Freight and I wasnt' sure if it was worth a damn. It had a max length of only 10ft though, I guess If I could get another truck that close it might work. What weight range should it be able to handle?

Take a look at the More Power Puller. I have one and it's ready for anything.

Be careful with those cheapo come-along things. I have one and I'd be scared to death using that thing anywhere near the claimed rating. With any kind of load it creaks and groans like its going to come apart at any minute. Take a close look at how well its made. On mine you have to make sure the ratchet mechanism engages with the gear on the cable reel every time for fear of it suddenly disengaging when you're moving the handle to get ready for the next pull. With these, I think you get what you pay for, and if you don't pay much you don't get much.

Minus the soccer balls and hef usualy stays at the mansion

Tools and tow straps
Wire
Beer
Beer
Basic camping gear
Beer
Food
water
extra clothes
Boots
Most importantly more than one person and friends with other trucks
first aid kit
Spare parts
Ect
The more prepared the better

I wheel with some people who could build there truck again 3 times over so you cant ever bring to much!
It really helps if you can tow it there but I know thats not possible for everyone but its the safest and best way to go IMO

The playmates are a must though

I wheel a bobbed 82' PU with a carbed 22R so I try to keep the weight down.
Along with all the items mentioned above, I keep a collection of nuts & bolts and other MacGyvering items to rig the rig back together if need be.
I bring a water purifier so I don't have to bring an excessive amount of water. Also I always have my Jet Boil packed along with coffee and MRE's.
In the winter I keep a propane heater packed.

Same here...plus I need room for all the beer!!
I usually bring .... comealong...and yes its the cheapo version, and yes...last time I was stuck it failed.
Maps and gps are a must( ok so gps is not 100% essential, but maps are)
T.p. When ya gotta go, ya gotta go
50' of heavy chain
Cell phone, and 2way radio (cell phone has a camera)
Food, and water
motor oil, gear oil, atf
leatherman
and I always keep a survival kit in all my vehicles, bandaids, neosporen, gauze, space blanket, waterproof matches, magnesium striker, and a hatchet.
Thats it for me, I figure if I have too many tools, I will get cocky, and spend more time fixing my rig on the trail than exploring.

O...almost forgot...I always wear comfy waterproof boots, ya never know how far you may have to hike out.

A comalong is important but your high lift can also be used to pull. A couple of shakles and a good tow rope (NO STRETCH IF POSSIBLE) and you ccan get 30-40 inches of STRONG PULL, that thing (a good high lift) can pull 5 ton no prob.
I also like to carry a small soldering style butane lighter, fits in my hand and good to 1800 degrees, some solder and flux (just a little) because elec. tape can't fix everything.

Not a bad idea to have some benedryl when in the woods, especially on those camping/wheelin trips. You never know what may bite, sting you.

What does everyone use to hold their stuff? I use rubermade tubs often, but would like to pick up some ammo cans to store things I always want with me.
