SAS questions...

Alright, great site, been on here for 8 or so months. It has been 1 yr exactly since i purchased my 88....and in the year, i tried very hard to convince myself i could wheel IFS and not be too shabby. After reading more, i've just found that SA is a great way to go. Last longer, and is a great platform for those who wanna turn their trucks into something awsome.

They make kits, and in those kits you get spring options. small and big. What is your guys' opinions...If you do a SAS, do you live by the " go big or go home" mentality?? or can you go with mild lift...say 3-4? I'm torn. I just don't know how to even go about starting this project. I can get a housing around here for 150 with a 3rd, some gears, and all the outer bits. How much can i HONESTLY look to spend to SA the front...lift the rear, gear it and and slap some bigger rubber on??

All of this said...I don't think i am a HUGE ethusiast of off roading yet. I drag racing all year, and when winter comes, i find all the bs to mess around in, but i would just like a capable truck. capable of going out and keeping up with the others around here. I drive the truck year around, as my DD, so extreme would probably be a waste. i figure maybe staying with 33's would be a good idea for me.

I could keep going on and on and on.....but i would like opinions, im sure they'll flood in!! thanks in advance.

Do only enough lift to not interfere with the tires your going to use. I would go with a minimum of 3 inches, so you can run a crossover steering setup. You already have the box just buy the kit.

Honestly it sounds like SAS is not a good option for you. Instead look at traction devices, limited slip or locker, a mild lift. You can do all this for less than a SAS. I like to wheel and do well with a locked IFS. Besides IFS has more front clearance than SAS.

i would lock the rear end and see how wheelin is like with that before throwing the money into an SAS.

Yes, pretty easy to fit 33's:

The re-gear for the larger tires (4.88 or 5.29) and put a locker of some sort in the rear and you are good to go.

Yeah, luckily i'm not bias toward a side. Like i said, i just want to have a capable rig, and figured maybe SAS would make a better platform for wheelin. Locker in the rear ixed with my new trxus MT's should make it a good runner with IFS, but just kinda interested in SA.

Im the guy that spends 200 bucks to try a new cam combo in my race car, only to try a new one 2 months later. I love to wrench and tincker with stuff. thats why i figured id give it a shot.

I say go for it. I just picked up a matching set of axles out of an 81. With two sets of rear leafs for 300.

I am going to pretty much fabricate and make my own kit. Buy my own Grade 8 Bolts. Get a U bolt flip kit, Hysteer, And start mocking up the axle under my 4runner.

I am going to leave the stock gears in it for now, the third members are easy to pull and re-gear.

I am going to rebuild them of course and put lockers front and rear.

You should build your truck to what you need to get the job done. Whatever that might be.

If you like to tinker then this will be fun. That is why i am doing it. I am bored. Obviosly, i just wrote a book.
