Outer Banks, Hatteras, Corolla...July '11

Every year my wife's family plans a vacation and this year it is OBX, NC! We will actually be renting a house in Rodanthe (directly across the street from the 'Nights of Rodan' house).I've never been, but have been researching the area for camping and beach driving.

Can anyone please add your experience/tips with the area wheeling and camping....things to see, do, avoid, gear to take(besides standard stuff)....?

here are some sites i have been reading:

BeachAccessMap.kmz - Google Maps
Cape Hatteras National Seashore - 4x4 Trail Info
Outer Banks Beach Information
Beach Rules and Regulations
Corolla 4x4 Beach
Cape Hatteras National Seashore (U.S. National Park Service)

Thanks

Hi. We have a house in KDH. Are you bringing your "project truck?" I have a 1st gen 4Runner that will live down there as soon as I get it painted and get a soft top.
Join the OBX Connection message board. Everyone's very friendly and you can ask any question. There's a thread with pics about the Nights in Rodanthe house, "Serendipity." There's a long thread on four wheeling in the Fishing forum. The access ramps around Hatteras seem to open and close a lot and it gets confusing. In KDH we can drive on the beach before Memorial Day and after Labor Day. Here's the link:

i've gone down on the 4th of july a bunch of times. i stay at the oregon inlet (national/state) campground, which allows everything from tents to large rv's. it's just down the road from route 12, and less than an eighth of a mile to the beach ramp, with miles of beach open to 4-wheelers. and since it's on the inlet, it's a good spot for fishing. i went down to hatteras one 4th o' july, but it was just too crowded with too many people

obx for life!

going to hatteras was a part of growing up for me. i started wheelin sand there when i got my first 4x4 truck. there is a beach ramp right at the south end of salvo right outta town. about 10-15 mins south of the nights in rodanthe house. now they close and open that ramp now because of bird migration and i am in fl currently so i wouldnt be able to tell u if that specific ramp is open right now. but u can head south from there and come up on plenty more ramps to chose from along that stretch of salvo to buxton

buxton has trails and more beach driving to chose from and same with frisco.
u will want to air down most of the time as the sand can get deep once off the ramp

Go all the way down to where you get on the ferry to Okacoke. Go straight that will take you to the south point, miles of beach driving. Were down last week of june thru fourth of july week.Airport road in buxton,I think is ramp 43,go back north towards the north point. Also go thru avon, first ramp acess and go south,be careful, real deep soft sand.Check online for beach closing due to the stupid piping pluffer.
Watch out for Irab88, he will sneak up on you on the beach and eat all you hot dogs and burgers.

yeah, airing down is a must. it's something everyone does (except the round philipino ladies who get their 2wd dodge stuck in the sand not 5 feet off the ramp)

I'll share anytime, and talk about trucks.
We were leaving, that weekend after seeing you, and I was at red drum,I guy asked if I had a winch, and said I did.He said that some guys went out on the north point acess road,in a cadiliac and was sunk up to the frame, and if I would pull him out........ well I told him to buy a shovel and call the exxon.

I go out there pretty religiously during the summer, but I only live half hour or so away from Kitty Hawk if I don't go during peak travel times. I have done that once and never again will I subject myself to that kind of anguish. There are a lot of campgrounds along the beach and many of them seem pretty ok.
