ARB Air Locker Install?

Howdy!

I'm prepping for my ARB install coming up this Saturday and was wondering if anyone knows of a good write-up of the installation on a 3rd Gen 4Runner (or equv).

I would also be interested to see where 3rd Genners are mounting the compressor. There's not a heck of a lot of room under the hood! I am currently considering the rear compartment but I am loath to drill holes there.

Anyone?

Here ya go, not 3rd-gen but it's pretty much the same differential in the rear.

Gene, sorry I can't help you here, but are you going to be down at Central 4WD in Kent for this?
If so, if you are going to be there for the install, I may swing by to meet ya.

Well... I have worked out a deal, through a freind, with some of the *extremely* qualified techs to do it in their off hours. Saved me about $500.00 in labor!

C4WD wanted $700.00 just for labor! Ouch! My wife was not buying that. Hell, the parts alone were around $900.00 when including taxes.

Once I get this done, I will be itching to try it out. We should put together a NW Run!

O o p s, I can tell I'm tired tonight

You would not need a write-up if you were having Central do it.
Yeah, I was quoted about $1800 from them for a rear Air Locker, and new Timkim bearings, and the labor.
Regarless, they always put in new bearings to be safe.

And that was for my stock gears still.
I was almost thinking of heading up to Greenwater Saturday morning for just a few hours to explore a bit, but I'm not sure if I'm going to get up there or not this weekend.

Probably wait a few more.

See. This is why the Toy electric locker is a much better deal. $750 for parts, a little welding and grinding and a few new studs, $25 at RatShack, and you've got yourself a very reliable locker.

The people who are doing the install are most likely the best people in the area to do the install - let's just say that they are not "third-party".

I am looking for a write-up to keep up with them. I will be doing the compressor install myself so a little help there would be nice. I'm still searching!

That is what I want to do Shane in the future.
Only thing is my rig could not be down for more than the day it's being worked on.

I will have to look into this more in the future. I even think Inchworm is selling 3rds all setup already where you just swap out your 3rd, and re-use your own axles right?

I think I read you have to get a new ECU box too? If so, to bad you just can't supply the spark to the wiring to fire it up.
The elusive Eaton E Locker for the vehicles it goes into already only has two wires. Positive and negative, and your switch.

Corey, remember that the 3rd member and the axle housing are two different things. On that note, yes, Inchworm is modifying axle housings for an extra $125. Also, you can either build the control box for the locker, or buy the stock "ECU" box from a junkyard. There's some info here on wiring the locker.

Thanks, I will have to bookmark those and read up on it.
All I need is a nice Toy E locker, and a new rear bumper from Badlands, and I'm set.

Screw lower gears, I don't need to go faster than I do now

Yes, they have it listed on this page of their site. No idea on price though...

Well, the install went okay. Once we got things broken down, we noticed that the pinions bearings were bad. Luckily, we had resources within out grasp.

It took about 4 hours to do. I can't wait to install the compressor and hit the hills to try it out. Finding a good location for this compressor is hard! All the Taco guys have this perfect spot, just begging for a compressor. In my Y2K Runner, it just were the ABS sits... Damn!

I'd hate to have to mount it in the back of the cabin, but I may not have a choice. Either way, I guess it's a good problem to have!

Gene, just a thought here.
You know those JL Audio Stealth boxes that sit on the side of the hump for a sub woofer?

I wonder if you could house the ARB compressor in it?
With it enclosed and with sound deadening, you might not hear it too much.

If heat was a concern, mount a fan in the box like Jim (mytruck) did with his Phoenix Gold amp install in the back of his Extracab.

Gene, check out the box in the back of John & Kim's '90.
Something like that might really do it.

I'm pretty sure you know that lower gears = lower speed per motor RPM.

Slower, faster, whatever... Toy E-Lockers rule!!

Yeah, what I meant was faster take off speed due to the lower gear ratio.
If I need to go faster, I'll real out my winch line with my handy dandy Ramsey Wireless Remote, and lasso me a sports car to get me up to speed
