I'm considering buying an '88 4Runner for an everyday driver (so that I can work on building my '86 into the 'Runner of my dreams!)

I've found one that looks super with the V6 in it. My question for the experts on here is about the rebuilt engine in it--a Jasper engine. It has low miles on the rebuild, but the cost is at the upper end of what I have budgeted. If everything else looks good, how much does this rebuilt engine add to the value?

Any advice would be appreciated. I hope to be on here with a build for my '86 sometime in the future.

I'm looking at offering $7,500.

Less than 10k on the rebuilt engine.

Ride has a couple of extras that I'm cool paying for. Just don't want to give too much credit to the engine if Jasper rebuilds aren't well done.

 

dang that sounds expensive, unless it has a great body and drivetrain.

Doesn't look like she's ever been wheelin'. Beautiful in and out. I'll make sure to try out the drivetrain before the cash gets handed over :-)

 

I put a Jasper 22RE in my '88 4Runner about 4 years ago. I've since put almost 70,000 miles on it and it's been a great daily driver. I've had the valves adjusted once and have been changing the oil regularly, and it hasn't missed a beat. It cost me about $4500 for the motor and to have it put in, including a lot of the various filters, mounts, belts, etc. I don't know if the warranty is transferable, but I haven't needed it. I think you can feel pretty good about the Jasper rebuild.

 

That does sound a bit high to me..(Pictures?) I am always leery of "rebuilds" though. I bought an 85 4runner back in september that supposedly had one of those "rebuilt 60k ago" motors. well needless to say, along rolls december and boom, the motor goes out. while tearing the motor apart there were plastic pieces of timing guide in the pan (even though it had the metal guides put in) and all original bearings and such. They had replaced the guides, but never bothered to drop the pan or remove te head and do anything else..Unless they just have documentation of the rebuild, I would treat it as an original motor.

I've seen a receipt showing where the rebuild was done. It checks out with the area the 'Runner was at during that year. I know I can't totally be sure, but this seems legit.

 

thats a good sign. If there are receipts, then I think you can trust it for the most part. Mine didnt have any which was why I got worked over. sounds like yours is legit.

 

$7500 for an '88 it must be about perfect. If i was gonna spend that much I would be looking at a 3rd Gen 4Runner...JMO..

Don't spend 7500 for one of these trucks. Buy a $2500 one and build it yourself. Only way to do it.

Lol--You're right, I am in heat. But, I have been since I bought my '86 back in 1995. Love that ride! I've still got her, although she blew a gasket over 12 years ago. I've never had the cash to pay for her to be fixed, and don't have the space, tools, or know-how to build her myself. Having come in to a bit of money, coupled with the two family cars passing the 135k mark, I want a 4 wheel drive as a daily driver. This way, even though I'll overpay by a bit, I get my itch scratched every day and can now start the build on my '86 w/o having to worry about needing to have it up-and-running as soon as money starts going into her.

I hope to be showing pics of the '88 soon and starting a build on the '86 soon after.

I was doing some searching for Runners on Craigslist the other night. There were a couple over in the St. Louis area. Perhaps you might find one there that would fit your stable?

 

The two that I saw were in Wildwood. Might check 'em out and see if one suits your fancy.
