87 22r 222K miles

Hey fellas! So I've been looking for a new rig since the loss of mine and this go around I would like a Pick-Up with a 5spd. I found this 87 and called them up and asked a few questions... The engine was replaced at 198K by Evergreen engines in Reno, NV? Something like that, I need to look them up.. It now has 222K. It's an elderly lady selling it that mainly uses it for the 4WD and hauling of soil. The previous owner of her was a family friend of her's that apparently took great care of it. I guess he is a service record Nazi so I can hopefully find whatever I want in there. Anyways the body is CLEAN, the dash pad is cracked, the heater does not work (They think it is the cable on the control assembly, maybe it snapped/fell out?), with the hubs locked and cranking the wheel all the way, the axles or ball joints begin to bind. All easy stuff! She said it starts up every time and occasionally will have to push the gas pedal 3 times, i'm assuming that is when it is really cold. I have heard good and bad things about the 22r, bad things being the fact that working on a carburetor is different. So for anyone that has the 22r, can you give me a few things to check when I go and look at it tomorrow night? Thanks!

The only thing I can think of right now is to check if the CV boots are all torn up, since you say they use the 4WD all the time.

With a body that straight and with the small amount of things wrong with it, I'd say it's worth the price. A truck like that over on the east coast would go for over $5000 easily. Things like the dash pad and the heater are simple fixes. They're basically a non-issue in my book.

Any concerns with having that high of miles? I mean I'll obviously look at everything but I'm usually scared away at 200k, so 222k may be pushing it. I don't see any harm checking it out though

I know the timing chains in the 22r and re tend to stretch to the point where it grinds through the plastic guide. However, there is no way of knowing if that is happening in that truck without taking it all apart, which I doubt they would let you do.

That thing looks cherry! Id buy it, run it until it craps out while saving money to swap it when it finally does. That generation is an endangered species back where i grew up.

Well I checked it out today. It is not as nice as it looks in the add.. Every panel looks to be a different shade, over all it needs some TLC, the coolant was low, the reservoir was dry, no SR5, It looks like it leaks oil, tranny fluid and gear oil. my 4runner did as well, just gotta keep it topped off i guess? Anyways, it started great, ran great, shifted great, and I am interested but i'm worried about commiefornia smog so they said they were willing to drive it over to cali to smog it. I think I am going back Monday to do a compression check... They also said they would lower the price down to $2,300.. I am thinking more like $2,100.. It's not as nice as my 4runner but not quite a beater, it has potential. It has been driven 8k miles in 7 years. I did not get to check the 4WD because it began to overheat from lack of coolant. The "O-rings?" were replaced in 2004, maybe 10k miles ago due to over oil consumption.. So it's not bad, but it could use some work. It runs great though! So when I go and see it next I will do a compression test and check the 4WD system..
