2001 4runner rear locker

Hi guys,

I have a 2001 4runner, with central diff locker (with VSC & TRAC) and want to put a rear elocker (already I have the one, the two 4WD modules and the arness of a '97 4runner) but I don't know if I will have an issue with the central diff, I mean, does the central diff. still works if I change the 4WD module?

what mods need to do?

thanks...

If you have the whole rear axle from the '97, you can install the whole thing on your 2001, with a small modification of a bracket (and maybe some small changes to the rear brake lines). As long as the '97 had ABS, then I think the new axle will work fine with the VSC and TRAC system on your 2001. If the '97 did not have ABS, then you're better off just installing the 3rd member from the '97 into the axle housing of your 2001.

If all you got was the 3rd member from the '97 (or if the '97 did not have ABS), then you'll have to modify your rear axle housing slightly to fit the e-locker 3rd member from the '97. We've got lots of threads here covering that. Here's a good writeup for you to read.

You can wire in the rear e-locker to work independantly of anything else, with a switch, without changing the 4WD module. I believe you can also do it by adding the e-locker ecu. There's a member on here named "eric-the-red" that did it recently to his 2001 4Runner, I believe, and I think he used the e-locker ecu. You could try sending him a PM to see if he can help you out.

And to answer your other question, if you do it right, the installation of the rear locker will not affect your center differential lock at all. They will be totally independant of each other.

You might get more answers to your post if this thread gets moved over to the appropriate section in the forum (3rd gen 4Runner tech section).

I added a rear locker to my 2001 last year and I used the ecu from a 99 4Runner, along with the complete axle. I did not touch the ecu for the original 4wd system or the centre diff lock. The centre diff lock, ABS, VSC and TRAC all work as they did before. I did not wire up the 4wd wire on the locker ecu so mine works any time I push the button, in 2wd or 4wd. I did connect the speed sensor so it won't engage above 5 mph. The axle I got had ABS and just required some minor bracket mods, shown here
