New Trucks

I bought some new toys today.... cant wait to bring them home. Got a package deal (and it was a good deal):

2 84 Toyota Pickup Reg Cab Shortbed 22R 5spds and a '85 4Runner 22RE 5spd.

As soon as I get them home I'll post pics. The 85 Runner will most likely be for sale in the next couple months if anyone is looking (but it probably will have a 22R in it, not a 22RE.) I plan on finishing it with parts off of one of the 84 pickups, then selling it to help offset costs. One of the 84's I'll keep for a new wheelin rig, and the other 84, depending on whats left, will either get scrapped/sold for parts, or given/sold to my cousin for labor on the other 2.

lol ya i can, and its not pretty.....

and your tranny wouldnt like you.

I am stoked about these trucks..... Cant beat 3 solid axle toyotas....

I learned a while ago it's better to spend time/money getting the vehicles you do have running rather than buying additional POS's.

With that said... will you let me wheel the 84?

And Keith, as long as the road isn't busy you can tow it in low range just fine.

All my vehicles run except for one... its a long term thing....

No you cant wheel the 84... I havent figured out its role in my fleet yet.

I brought 1 home today, the 84 I'm keeping. Tomorrow I'm going to get the 85 Runner and bring it back, then the other 84 on thursday... My neighbors are going to love me.

No pics yet... its not even off the trailer.

The other 84 will donate the front axle to the runner, some interior parts, and possibly the motor/tranny. It will then get the axle out of the runner (broke pinion) and a motor out of the bed of the 84 i'm keeping (most likely). In the bed of the 84 I'm keeping we so far have at least 1 4cyl longblock, at least 2 4cyl short blocks, a bumper, 1 rim and tire, a radiator, plus some other stuff I havent even gotten down to... its like a mini parts store

what are you thinking? the axle in the 85 is good except for the 3rd, its just easier to swap the whole axle....

EDIT: and you should know i have 2 85 axles at my house besides these......

i want one to start rebuilding. wont be under the truck anytime soon, but want to completely rebuild it, and have it ready to go when the time does come.

ahhh... well after i get all these sorted out and figure out what im doing we might be able to work something out. I have plenty of bare housings with knuckles if you wanted just that for a start...

that would probably work... plan on 30-spline longs anyway. rocktoberfest lit the fire under me to get something started... even if its not much.

Ah, youre alright man, no biggie. I'll set aside a nice housing and knuckles for ya... and see if i can find some of the other goodies you'll want (hubs, lockouts, calipers for cores, etc..) Come up and see me sometime!

As you wish, back to topic: I'll take some pics of the 84 at lunch tomorrow.

Yeah Keith, better to just start off with parts as you won't use a lot of the stock stuff.

You need:
Housing
Knuckles
Lower knuckle caps
Spindles
Locking hubs
Dust shield (or spacers)

You don't need:
Steering arms
3rd member
axle shafts (maybe as spares?)
Solid axle rotor/hub assembly and calipers
Torque arm

I agree with Hans... I'm also pretty sure I've got it all except the spindles.

EDIT: wait, why not the rotor/hub? I know you use IFS or LC rotors (dont remember which) but I thought you still used the hubs.... Or do you just use the whole assm? (see how much I've been payin attention....)

I got spindles.

You use the IFS hub (not locking hub components) to widen the axle. Link at bottom of post. The "best" option I think is the spacer with LC rotors and IFS calipers. Let me edit this for a fourth time to add.... I think the IFS rotors > solid axle rotors for street use due to extra heat dissipation. Solid axle rotors > IFS rotors for trail use due to larger diameter giving brakes more leverage. LC rotors are the best of both worlds with larger diameter and venting.

From Pirate FAQ, just swapping vented rotors (no change in track width):
81-85 toyota mini axles -> Rotor bolts onto the hub with 2 bolts and the wheel studs are prasses through the hub and is pressed into the rotor. For the Land Cruiser vented rotor swap you must use 81+ LC rotors. Uses Toyota 90942-02053, Dorman #610-264 or Napa 641-3126 wheel studs.

The Landcruiser rotors are wider because they are vented but otherwise fit right on with no other modification besides the caliper.
The caliper comes in two flavors... one has two larger pistons and two smaller, and another has four pistons that are the same size. The ones with four large pistons would technically give you more braking force. I used the same pads because mine were still fairly new... so you don't need new pads unless yours are low.
