Congrats to us new 87 T-Runner

Ok, so after a longggg day of driving we made it home and we bought it!! So now we actually can belong to the club, right??

Here are some new shots of Cass's new ride, of course, it needs some fixing up. No sunroof, but pretty much everything else. Unfortunately it is not running. Will set out to diagnose the trouble monday. We plan to take it to branson and pull our little 14' boat Nov 1st so don't have much time. Dash is in nice shape.

OK so I couldn't wait. I don't know exactly what was wrong for the PO but I jerked the battery out of my pickup because the one in the runner was stone dead. Put it in the runner and it started after the second try. ran a little rough, I let it idle for a while and warm up. Then test drove it. Adjusted the headlights and test drove it again. It met or exceeded my expectations. Much better performance overall than the 3.0L auto that we had in our 2nd gen 4 runner. In Normal tranny mode it would outperform the 3.0 in power mode, I am sure.

Now I need tires and some interior trim. Gotta get the trailer lights hooked up and clean it up good, maybe take some laquer thinner and wipe the paint of the decals that some PO decided to spray on.

So far better than expected. Picked it up for less than a grand.

OK the saga continues..

Took Dad's truck home that we towed the runner home with and got the suburban that we have that is now sold and the new owners are coming to get... any way I tried starting the runner and it didn't want to start. Got it going though, running rough and not wanting to stay running at idle. Drove it to the gas station and filled it up and come home. It idles fine after it is fully warmed up.

So, here are the clues:

Won't idle cold
Puffs white smoke when you rev it
Misses occasionally
Has a whooshing sound in the heater piping every time you rev the engine.
Its a 22RTE with 144,000 miles on it...

Anyone care to guess?

Let me give you a hint: think warm, fuzzy, head and head gasket thoughts...

Yup, sounds like a head gasket. Do a compression check to make sure.

Nice rig!!! Let me know if you need a parts truck. I have my 87 runner I'm going to sell and I know where a 87 turbo pickup that runs with new turbo stuff and a 5spd is for sale...

Ow... you struck a cord... Turbo Pickup?? I need an engine for my X-cab I just painted. Take me to your leader. I want to look at your parts truck when we are in MO Nov1 through 5.

By the way, it looks like maybe I am adding up too much, the white smoke seems to disappear this afternoon. My Dad stopped by and looked at it and we are not getting combustion bubbling in the radiator whent he engine is cold, so maybe not blown??? It is running great during the day today, with a slight mis sometimes at idle.

What about the Cold start injector? maybe that could cause it to run bad at idle? I think the used TPS the PO put in is a bit flaky as well..

usually when the cold start goes bad, it dumps more fuel in and you'll get a rich smell from the exhuast... Bring it by and we can take a look if possible. I've also got some TPSs laying around if ya need one. Also, theres a way to check them to make sure they're working right... its in a FSM.

Does the white smoke smell sweet?

On the turbo truck, the guy works for me, and its his nephew's... I'll track him down and PM you his number!

Thanks Cory, I talked to him and I am going to try and hookup when we come up next Saturday (Nov 1). If it runs decent I'll probably buy it and stuff the drivetrain into my 88 X cab because it needs help really bad...

Call me next week and lets setup a time/place to meet. My cell is 580-467-0288

88 and 87 should be the same. It's the 86/87 transition you have to watch for. I don't remember when the next update to the 22RE occured.... 89? 90? later?

I wonder if the new oxygen sensor I bought from Toyota for my 22RE pickup will work in my 22RTE Turbo runner..
