Is it possible to swap the AWD transfer case on the Mannual Transmission with the part time case from the Auto? Is bolt pattern the same? Is there any Part time floor shift T-Case from Previous generation Tacomas and 4Runners that can be used on the FJ? I prefer a MT with Part time case...hate AWD. Toyota should have made the Auto with AWD and the mannual with part time.

 

That is a good question, I agree with you.

 

I wouldn't recommend swapping out for the older tc because the newer part time tc's have a torsen limited slip center diff in there so ideally speaking you'd want a tc from either the 2003+ 4runner or 2007+ part time transfer case.

Btw the bolt pattern should be the same. I'll find out in a few weeks when I get a chance to remove mine.

The 4runner T-Case would be nice but it does not have floor shift like the FJ... And really I do not care for the Torsen Center diff or AWD. The GX470 has floor shift but it is AWD. Maybe when you take off yours yould should see if it can be converted to floor shift..it may have a cover on top.

 

Unfortunately my tc is a full time case and it's all electronic so I know there are no openings on the top.

The torsen lsd will give you the ability to drive in full time 4hi with no binding effects which means you can be in 4hi on the pavement whereas the older tc (found on the taco's) can not.

Getting the 07+ FJ part time case should be bolt on so you might as well go that route since you can still reconnect the center diff lock and all of the electronics that comes with it (vehicle skid control - vsc).

If you want to ultimately get away from that completely, how about just getting a part time tc from either Inchworm (they make em bolt on) or get a 4 speed tc from Atlas.

So basically 3 options:
FJ Part Time TC
Inchworm Part Time TC
Altas 2 speed or 4 speed TC

crap forgot about that one. I don't think you'd be able to bolt on the 6m/t tc to the 5a/t tc since the bolt pattern is different. what you would need is an a/t adapter plate that Inchworm sells.

But at that point if you're going to go that route, you might as well just get their t/c and the a/t adapter plate and call it a day.

Based on my experience; the AT has 3 transfer indicator switches that get wired into the Skid Control ECU and there is no speed sensor. The MT has 2 transfer indicator switches that get wired into the Skid Control ECU and a speedo sensor that gets wired directly to the speedo cluster. The AT speedo information is sent from the wheel sensors to the Skid Control ECU then on to the speedo cluster.

I believe you should be able to swap tcases w/o an adapter plate. My Inchworm geared tcase uses the same adapter (I think...) as the 05+ MT Tacoma and I have an AT FJ. This tells me that the AT and MT have the same bolt pattern on the tcase end. The FSM images of the AT and MT tcases also look exactly alike.

If you swap tcases you will have to install a speed sensor in the part time tcase in order to get your speedo to work properly. You will also have to rewire the transfer indicator switches. All of this is easily accomplished by reading thorough the FSM and wiring diagrams.

If I were you I would just order the Inchworm geared tcase with 5:1 gears from Inchworm and be done with it. Jim did a test fit on my FJ and the tcase with the adapter installs w/o drive line mods. Simple wiring of the indicator switches and some 4wd shifter adjusting was all it took.
