Gas Tank Leaking
Been finding small dried up puddles under the truck. Wasnt sure if it was from my truck or my work truck. Today I noticed yet another puddle and looked under the truck again, where the back strap that holds the tank its wet and I dab my finger on it and smell..yep gas.
So, yea the thing is metal (STUPID!!!) for a 96 truck. Hoping I dont have to buy OEM as Im sure its $$$. Ebay showed a few well over $500.
Welding the tank imho is never a good idea either. Hoping its just a line, but we shall see.

In each of my builds below and which is actually 4 builds. I have used it. It even says on the can that it will seal a certain size hole. On my 88 build below, I have some information on it. Also you may have what looks like rust in your tank.
Everyone calls it a rusty tank, but if you clean it out, you will find there is no damage to the tank. I really feel it is a chemical build up. When I have cleaned the tank, when done soaking with vinegar, I have wound up with a 1/4th to one 1/2 cup of rust dust. These tanks get bad.
I am not familiar with the T-100s, but trucks do tend to have rust on the top of the tank as mud just sits there and builds up. You will need to pull the tank and I would tap around the top and make sure it solid. The tanks on trucks are more exposed then what the runners are.
On the first page of my 88 runner build below, I have some information on the tanks on the first page.

End result is the following:
Was unable to remove tank today but did confirm looking thru skid that it appears to be pinholes on the bottom near rear strap. Going to remove tank next week and take to be brazed/welded by a guy who does tanks and rads. Tanks straps where it bolts on are totally rusted solid and an impact gun rounded them off. Tried hand tools and PBlaster first with no luck. Appears we can knock out the pins on the straps on the other side and replace with some bolts easily enough.
Other options were to coat it (dont have enough time really), replace with new (toyota is the only one who has them and its 600 shop cost) or used and there werent many nearby and only one yard would ship but condition might be an issue coming out of rustbelt PA.
So we shall see.

Decided to weld it, its more than a pin hole. Where the one tank strap was trapped sand/dirt and caused a hole about 3/16" big and some smaller pin holes. Quoted about 150 to fix it, which isnt that bad.
New tank straps on order, 150 bucks from toyota with my 20% discount! And new gasket for the fuel pump and filler neck as well as new filler neck vent line. Otherwise no big deal.
To top it off I borrowed a relatives pickup truck, its a plow truck and the frontend is falling off and the crank sensor was bad. So since he let me use it for a week I bought a crank sensor and did it to the tune of 150 bucks for the damn part and alot of aggravation.

Ouch!!! You got a double whammy on that with your straps and your relatives truck. One reason I do not like borrowing some of my relatives truck. If it is going to break, it will break on me and I am the one fixing it and I take better care of it then they do. Been down that road before.

I cant believe how much the straps are..but they are shot either way. One is bent from offoading I guess and both of them I cannot get the bolts out of properly so its gonna be fun fun fun.

Hey, my cousin let me use the truck Im just happy. He has done alot for me in thepast so why not help him out a bit. I did tell him NOT to buy a dodge in the first place and not to plow with it..but hey his own fault lol.

At least you are fortunate enough for him to loan you his truck. Being in New Jersey I can imagine all of the straps are rusted in the yards as well. The dealer has got you when you have to go to them but at least you can get it on the road again.

There wasnt even a tank in NJ. It was either rust belt PA or NH and both wanted $$$$ to ship it cause your not supposed to ship such things. Cant ship UPS so gotta be drop shipped like an engine.

Welp its all fixed. Tank repair, parts, labor (gotta pay my buddies, even if it is a reduced cost.) wound up costing me about half of what it would cost if I bought a new tank and parts. I didnt change the fuel pump, however the bolts are brand new and coated so getting them off in my driveway should be easy if need be.
