Fan bearing blows up

Fan bearing blows up
I was doing some hill climbs today in my T. Everything was going well and fine. And on one hill I was climbing up and I almost got to the top when I heard a loud pop and I instantly lost powersteering. As it turns out the fan bearing can bust loose and send it into the radiator.
And when that happens the shoud is torn apart, the front of my motor is scarred, the hoses are junk, the alternator and power steering are useless and the entire front of the engine compartment is fubarred.
I will try to get some pics tomorrow evening.

yea...that amazing Toyota Fan Support design. thought they woulda fixed that with the 5vz but no dice.
BTW people, if that thing is making noise, REPLACE IT or this happens.
At least it didn't take out your hood or anything else majorly.

That bearing never made any noise. It still turns freely with no problems. I think it was a mix of high miles and a lot of abuse. Luckily I found a used one and a cam cover for a hundred bucks from a friend. I should have it running a few days.

I get parts though a supplier called
Worldpac. They are factory Toyota quality without the cost
. The old T should be completely fixed by Thursday. It does drive right now. I just dont have any fan, a small pin hole in the radiator, and no powersteering (no belt for it).

PS you really can't tell from the radiator picture, but the entire radiator is bowed forward in the center about a half inch.

Big A, can you tell us exactly what broke first?Because i see your fan ,clutch, and pulleys all broke off from the cover. Is it like there is a bearing pressed into that cover that bears the load from belt tension and turning all the accessories? Ive got 200k on my 95' and it pops a little when its cold.

I believe that the first thing that broke was the fan bracket. It started to break and fatigued the aluminum. The bearing itself was fine. I heard it could be from tweaking the mount when changing the timing belt, or the fan clutch staying engaged (thats what happened to me). When that broke off the fan clutch assembly went into the radiator. That in turn took out the radiator, shroud, fan blades, cam covers, positive battery post, belts, upper radiator hoses and denting the hood. But I got it all back together this afternoon. It total for all of the parts came too $450. Not too bad for the amount of damage. Plus it was probably time for a new radiator.
Now its time to take the bed off and cut the frame down, add gears and a front locker, and take it to Tellico.
