Does anyone know if the "4WD control unit" AKA VSV's to control the 4WD actuator are universal to toyota trucks. In other words can I put the VSV of a '03 4 runner on a 95 toyota T100, since the ADD is more or less operating in the same way

 

Dunno if the 03 4runner has the ADD, but any of the ADD rigs around the same vintage should work. I doubt the 03 runner has the same actuator. I may have my old unit laying around. It worked fine when I took it off, but I haven't seen it in awhile. I'll see if I can find it and post back.

 

You would probably need to take a look at them to be sure. Might be connectors have changed, so may need to swap connectors. Might be the mounting brackets are different, so might have to make a change to attach them. But otherwise, should be the same basic feature/operation.

 

OK thanks. I have found a few of them in scrap yards in my area but they were duds and did not work. I may try some other models of that era. At least i can get my 4 WD to turn on. and then I just switch the hoses to get the actuator to disengage. Kind of a pain in the rear but do-able for the winter season. I am thinkign about weather to get another VSV unit (used of course) or just simply lock the actuator "on" and going with mannual hubs. Any recomendations.

 

I took out the whole ADD system and went with manual hubs, but that was when I was using it for a wheeler. For normal use, I think the ADD is a lot handier than the manual hubs. OTOH, the ADD wears out CV shafts faster....

 

I prefer my ADD in the winter time. would be nice to have manual hubs but with ADD all you do is pull the lever inside. no getting out in the cold and snow to lock the front hubs that hopefully still move freely. I would fix the ADD for now.

 

You can always just lock the front hubs when the snow starts to fly then shift in and out of 4WD as needed.

 

Although the 03 4runners did use ADD, they use an electric actuator, instead of vacuum actuator.

I believe vacuum stopped in 2000.

So, no, you cannot use an '03 valve in a 95. you can, however, use a 4runner or tacoma from model years 95-00 on it.

 

Thanks death couger that will help with the years on the "suck-tion" ADD. That may give me a few more vehicles to pull these out of.
