major short, the workings of a charge system??

I've got a RHD Diesel Hilux. Great truck, but... three weeks ago my battery came loose and seriously shorted, positive terminal to frame. Since there is no fusible link on the negative lead from the battery I blew a few relay switches, the heater relay, ticker relay, blew some fuses and maybe the voltage regulator. I've already had the alternator checked and it is fine. So now after my replacements (not the voltage reg yet) the battery still doesn't charge. Can I test a voltage regulator? Also since it is an import the voltage reguator has no part number. it has a six pin connection, are these things sort of standard, could I swap it for something else? Basically if I could better understand the charge system I might be able to make sense of what the hell is happening... Thanks.
