I have an 86 toy 4wd with a 22RE. My engine fuse blows every so often, but when it blows the truck still runs and my charge light goes on in the instrument cluster. I was told that the alternator is directly connected to this fuse and possibly running straight from the battery. anyhow, I replace the alternator thinking that it may be over charging an in turn blows the fuse. that didn't work! I noticed a couple times I noticed that when I shift to reverse the fuse blew. I'm pretty sure that the reverse circuitry is not in the same circuit as the engine fuse... I may be wrong.... anyone has any ideas as to why this is happening?

I had a similar problem on my 85 and 1 of my 87s. My problem turned out to be the main wiring for my dash. It had fallen down on the steering column and had worn through. It would blow the fuse at odd intervals that was extremely hard to trouble shoot. I finally took it to an electronics specialist and they fixed it.

 

Thanks for the info! I'll go check it out. I fugured it would a nightmare trying to find a short somewhere. I ordered the original service manual by Toyota and waiting for it to come in so I at least have the schematic to see what else may be sharing the same contact point with this particular circuit. this is an old thread i started a while back. I figured out why my engine fuse kept blowing and i thought i'd put it up here in case someone else runs into the same problem.

anyhow, i had a small oil leak coming from the rear side of the head cover. the oil eventually ran down the transmission which in turn soaked the reverse light connector located on the transmission. everytime i threw it in reverse the fuse would pop. Cleaned out the connector, replaced my head cover and no problem since.

hope this may help others with a similar problem!
