Question 89 yota pickup Highbeams don't work.

Hi,

Have any of you run accross this problem? I have an 89 Yota pickup, all the lights work, but when I flip on the Highbeams, the headlights go out! The highbeam indicator on the dash lights up, and all the running/tail lights remain on, but the headlights go out. Could this be the headlight relay under the hood? Any help would be apreciated!

Thanks,
KVR

Usually it is dirty or pitted contacts in the headlight combo switch:

Easy way to confirm this is pull back on the dimmer switch (to FLASH mode) and if the high beams come on, the problem is likely the high beam contacts in the switch.

I know it's a stupid question, don't get mad, but are both high beams burned out? I've done it myself before.

Thanks, but.......... the highbeams dont come on in the flas mode...... but the highbeam indicator on the dash does (both in flash and "locke" highbeam). And Pete.... I checked the bulbs too, and no luck, that's what has lead me to think the relay might be it. What do you guys think? Would that make sense? Like I said, the highbeam indicator on the dash comes on, but no lights. the lowbeams work normally. Thanks for the help

There is only one headlight relay that supplies power to the lights:
http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTri...adlights.shtml

So if you have any light out of the headlights (high or low beam) then that relay is working. High beam indicator works by actually passing current through the (off) low beam filament, so actually has nothing to do with the high beam circuit. You can think of the high beam indicator more as "low beams not on" vs. "high beams on":

So find out why the high beam filaments are not not getting grounded. You could try grounding the high beam wire at the back of the headlight connector and if that works then there is a wiring issue between there and the combo switch. Might be a loose connection in the wiring running down the steering column, have heard of that causing headlight issues before.

4Crawler.... you were right! I pulled the headlight/dimmer switch and took it apart and cleaned the contacts. That worked! We now have highbeams. Thanks for your help.
