85 electrical short.

Hey YotaHeads,
Appreciate some help here....
This 85 is draining battery, takes about 2 hours to run it dead. Found this out bringing her home from 5 hours away.
New alternator, battery is good. Have checked and cleaned engine grounds.
While driving, the voltage guage on the dash will jump when blinker is on. Windshield wipers bring it down 1/4 " when on.
Steering column has 1/2" play to the left and right. Looking at that, I see the two bolts that hold it. They are tight, but column still moves. After looking at my '87, I see what looks like a shim or spacer. I also see a groung wire on one bolt, which is absent from the '85.
Going to the junk yard tomorrow to dissect one and see what I can see.
Any other ideas???
Thanx, MH

Check and clean all of the ground wires, and even add a couple more from the engine and frame to the battery. I upgraded the grounds on my 86 4Runner and it helped a lot.

Sounds to me like a short some where, but I am not strong in electrical. Thought I would post a link to the Grounds for you. Maube it will help.

GREAT info. I had no idea of #4 ground. #3 ground on mine is connected to top of valve cover. Gonna look into moving it.
Previous owner said this engine was rebuilt 70k ago....Seems pretty clean and i see possible evidence of it-i.e. leftover cut hoses and such left in place from swap.
As luck would have it, I clicked your rebuild link first. More info I need, as my rear window doesn't work either. Thanx!!!!!!!!!!
