85 4Runner Lighting Help!!
Sorry if this is a repeat but this is my first thread.
I have a 1985 4Runner SR5, and as everyone would know, the headlights suck. Does anybody know a way to brighten the stock headlights, with brighter bulbs, for a little bit better visibility? Anybody used new bulbs and had success with them?

I used stock replacement halogens and since I totalled this truck, I had to take it to a certified headlight/tail light inspection station. He aimed them properly and I've never had such good lighting. Especially the high beams.

You can usually find those at most auto parts stores. Just look for a halogen sealed beam. Also, check the voltage at the back of the headlights to see if that is the cause of your low light output. If so, putting on any new headlight bulb won't do much good:

thanks 4 crawler. i know the voltage is fine because the lights work and operate just fine, i am just disappointed with the brightness. do you know off the top of your head how much replacement halogen bulbs cost?

Brightness = voltage. The headlights will light up with only a few volts, but full brightness requires full voltage. I had about a 2 volt drop on my stock headlights and upgraded the wiring, got rid of that drop and nearly doubled the light output with no other changes. Think of it like having a riding lawnmower and pulling out that engine and dropping in a big V8, but leaving the original gas tank and tiny fuel hose to feed that big engine. Likely you'll not get full engine output feeding that big engine with a tiny fuel line. Same with light bulbs, if you only have 10 volts with a stock lamp then try putting in a higher wattage bulb (more watts = more amps = more voltage drop) and you are likely to see the same or even less light output with a bigger bulb.

check out HID's. so much brighter than halogens. are your housings hazed up? If you do decide to go HID i highly recommend retro-solutions.com . i have 2 sets of their lights, one in my acura, another in my toyota. gonna get some for the aux lights and reverse lights, they make mini h3's also. Any questions feel free to ask me. They will boost your light output more than you can imagine. Halogens are anywhere from 10-20 bucks for replacements, depending where you get them.
