2nd gen cluster removal

My speedo lights finally went out after a couple months of hitting the dash when they would go off. So today i tore the dash apart, i got the guages loose but i could not get them more than a half inch out due to the speedo cable holding it back.

I tried disconnecting the cable from the tranny but there is to much friction to pull it through at all.

Does anyone have any tricks to getting it out easily?

Disconnect the cable at the cluster. It has a connector similar to an electrical connector and will pull straight out of the cluster when the tabs are squeezed. The connector is fairly large compared to the cable (3/4" around), white, and round.
